Melfa man dies after car hits ditch, overturns

A Melfa man died early yesterday when the vehicle he was driving ran off an icy stretch of state Route 609 and overturned in Accomack County, Virginia State Police said.

Clayton W. Kellam, 42, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:40 a.m. wreck, about a tenth of a mile north of state Route 638. Police said he was ejected from his vehicle after his car struck a ditch and overturned. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

State police also reported three fatalities on Sunday:

  • Roderick A. Barbour, 35, of Winchester was killed about 6:30 p.m. when his vehicle ran off South Pleasant Valley Road, struck a curb and overturned near East Cork Street in Winchester. Barbour, who was not wearing a seat belt, was ejected, police said.
  • Donald W. Huffman, 72, of Boones Mill died about 10:35 p.m. at Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital after being critically injured in a 9 p.m. crash on northbound Interstate 81, about a mile south of U.S. 11 in Rockbridge County. Police said Huffman's vehicle ran off to the right and struck a guardrail and trees before plunging down an embankment. Huffman was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected, police said.
  • Jeremy S. Rifkind, 27, of Dundas died shortly after midnight after his car left state Route 729 near state Route 46, overturned, and ejected him in Brunswick County. Rifkind was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
  • A total of 34 people have died on Virginia highways so far this year, compared with 35 at the same time last year.
