Five killed in crashes on Virginia roads

Three people were killed in highway crashes yesterday, Virginia State Police said.

Thelma D. Gray, 64, of Melfa died yesterday at 3:50 a.m. on U.S. 13, just north of state Route 764, in Accomack County on Virginia's Eastern Shore. Gray's car was struck by another vehicle while she attempted to make a left turn into the Perdue Farms factory, state police said. She was wearing a seat belt, police said.

In a second Eastern Shore crash, Samuel George Gilkeson, 78, of Onley was killed when he got out of his pickup truck after hitting a utility pole and was struck by another vehicle, police said. He died yesterday at 3:48 a.m. at the scene on U.S. 13, just north of state Route 657, in Accomack County.

Also yesterday, Myrus Maurice Brooks, 57, of Gloucester County died at 1:45 a.m. on state Route 198, just west of state Route 674, in Gloucester, state police said. His car struck a guardrail twice, went down an embankment and crashed into several trees. He was wearing a seat belt, police said.

State police also reported these recent crashes:

  • A 7-month-old boy died Saturday at a Suffolk hospital after he was ejected from a car seat. The fatality occurred after the child's father fell asleep on U.S. 58 in Suffolk about 6:55 a.m. and ran off the road, state police said. Logan Michael Lovelace of Palm Bay, Fla., died at Sentara Obici Hospital about an hour later.
  • A pedestrian, William Bailey, 18, was struck by a car Thursday at 6:13 p.m. on Emporia's North Main Street. Bailey died at VCU Medical Center early Friday.
  • Virginia's 2008 death toll was 787 yesterday, compared with 1006 at the same time last year.
