Manassas woman fatally hit by bus in Prince William
A Manassas woman was struck and killed by a bus in Prince William County on Wednesday.
Police said the driver of a bus making a right turn from the Manassas Mall did not see Cristina A. Claros, 29, who was attempting to cross Rixlew Lane at 7:15 p.m. The bus hit the woman and dragged her a short distance before running over her with its left front tire, police said. Claros was taken to Prince William Hospital in Manassas, where she died.
Her death brought the number of pedestrian deaths on Virginia roads this year to five.
Virginia State Police also reported two other fatal crashes this week.
Patrick Keith Shumate, 39, of Danville was killed Thursday after the sport utility vehicle he was driving north on state Route 41 in Pittsylvania County crossed into the opposite lane of traffic and struck a utility pole at 11:45 a.m., police said. Shumate was not wearing a seat belt, police said, and died at the scene.
William Clarence Ford, 46, of Elliston was fatally injured in a crash in Roanoke County on Sunday. Police said Ford was driving a pickup truck on West Main Street, 200 feet west of Yale Drive, about 9:20 p.m. when the truck ran off the shoulder and struck an embankment, overturning and ejecting the driver. Ford, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, died the next day at Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
A total of 38 people have been killed on Virginia highways this year, compared with 36 as of the same date last year.
