Victim in Richmond crash is identified

A 49-year-old Richmond man who died of crash injuries he suffered Nov. 16 was identified yesterday by Virginia State Police.

Douglas F. Wolliver Jr. of the 6000 block of Wainwright Drive in South Richmond died Sunday shortly after 4 p.m. at VCU Medical Center. He was a passenger in a car headed north on German School Road about a half-mile from his home when it was hit by a car at German School's intersection with Midlothian Turnpike, police said.

Police said the driver of the other vehicle, Crystal Crawford of Powhatan County, ran a red light at the intersection.

She was charged with reckless driving, and the investigation is ongoing, Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney Tracy Thorne-Begland said.

Wolliver's wife and daughter were also injured the crash. Their conditions were not available last night.

Wolliver was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Also:

  • Betty Butler Murray, 73, of the 1100 block of Salisbury Drive in Midlothian died last Wednesday of injuries she suffered Nov. 15 at 8:35 a.m., police said.
  • Murray was traveling south on Salisbury Drive in the village of Midlothian, about 300 feet north of Midlothian Turnpike and within sight of her home, when her sport utility vehicle struck a tree, police said.

    She died at CJW Medical Center (Chippenham), police said.

    Murray was wearing a seat belt, police said.

  • William C. Schlifke, 22, of Newport News died on Monday of injuries he suffered Saturday night in Newport News.
  • He was stopped at a red light on U.S. 17, just east of Warwick Boulevard, when a car struck his car from behind, police said.

    Schlifke was wearing a seat belt, police said.

    There have been 736 deaths on Virginia highways this year, compared with 942 as of the same date last year, state police said.
