Downtown Richmond holes being repaired
Crews were working last night to fix two large holes in the street in downtown Richmond that were discovered late Friday afternoon after part of a sewer line gave way.
Officials had shut down two of four lanes along East Main Street between South Seventh and South Eighth streets while workers repaired the road, said Richmond public utilities spokeswoman Angela Fountain. A parking garage in that block of Main Street will be closed until repairs are finished.
Fountain said she hopes all four lanes will be open for tomorrow morning's rush hour.
Each hole was about 9 or 10 feet deep and from about a foot to 18 inches across, Fountain said. The holes were formed when a granite piece of a sewer washed away under Main Street.
