A family of five escaped injury in a late-night fire at their home in eastern Henrico County, but their family pet wasn't so lucky.

The dog was in an attached garage where the fire began shortly after 11:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of Three Foxes Drive in the Varina Chase subdivision.

Four adults and a child got out of the house safely, as Henrico firefighters were able to confine the fire to the garage, which was gutted.

They got the family dog out of the garage alive, but it was transported to a Richmond veterinary hospital for emergency care, according to Battalion Chief Gary Stadnick. The dog's status was not immediately known.

More than 16 firefighters responded to the fire, which Stadnick said appears to have started accidentally in a corner of the garage where mechanical equipment was stored.
