TABOR CITY, N.C.  — A sheriff says a North Carolina state senator shot one of two intruders at his home and hospital officials say the man is in fair condition.

Multiple media outlets reported that Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten said that 74-year-old Sen. R.C. Soles of Tabor City shot Kyle Blackburn late Sunday afternoon.

A spokeswoman at Loris Community Hospital in South Carolina said Monday that Blackburn was in fair condition.

Batten says the shooting occurred when two men went to the senator’s house and tried to kick in his front door. No charges have been filed.

The sheriff’s office said the State Bureau of Investigation was handling the case. A call to an agency spokeswoman was not immediately returned. There was no answer at a number listed for Soles’ home.

The Democrat has been in the Senate 32 years.

drhoagie, you do know that not ALL democrats are anti-gun rights don’t you?  Or do you just prefer to lump all stereotypes on to people without learning anything about them as individuals?  If that’s the case then can we all go ahead and classify you as a raving loony?

The muckety mucks at the DNC must be doubly reeling today.  Not only does one of their own posses a firearm and uses it properly and responsibly but it appears 2 of their voters may be out of commission for some time now.
Someone in Washington needs to throw that state senator under the bus quickly before the people rally around him.

Kathy, in this article they are one in the same.  A gun owner was protecting himself with his gun.  So it’s about personal protection AND rights/ ownership.  I don’t own a gun as I don’t see the need to for me, but I don’t have a problem with those that do.  Rights are rights.  If I want to enjoy the rights I feel passionate about, then I should respect the right of others to do so as well, even if I disagree on a personal level.

“I don’t have a problem with people owning guns and if I see someone carrying a gun I will make sure to leave whatever place those people are.“

Funny.  Why would you leave?  Seeing them carry is a higher risk then those who are open carry and you do not see them?  The list of establishments that do not allow carry is a short list when compared to the establishments that do allow.  Chances are that you have been in places where a person was open carry and you just did not notice and your life was NEVER at risk.  Perhaps because you were looking for some irresponsible, cowboy hat wearing tattooed redneck hooping and hollaring.

I understand your fear…the constitution is a very scary things.  We should eliminate some of the scary parts.  Freedom of the press (because too much news can get people upset), freedom of religion ( you know, because of terrorist and things), freedom of speech (cause people can say things that I may not agree with and that scares me).

Show the list of an illegal act carried out by a person who had a conceal permit and used their handgun in the act.  Then show me the list of those who carried out an illegal act while carrying illegally.  ....and you are scared of those carrying legally?  You are chasing the wrong crowd.

Put me in an establishment with one person carrying legally and I will continue to go back.  For I am not scared of the constitution and good law abiding citizens.

The issue is about protecting one’s home/self. Its not about gun ownership.

I have no issues with a story like this the man was home defending himself.  As long as the others don’t start making decree that we should all carry guns or have to own guns for our own good.  There are some of us that just choose not to own a gun.

Careful.  You’re blending the agendas of two distinctly different groups of people.  No pro-gun citizen advocates that EVERYONE should be armed.  In fact, we specifically state that it is your CHOICE to carry a gun, and that carrying a gun is not for everyone.  All we are fighting for is our right to carry a gun to defend ourselves.  The anti-gunners feel that their hatred of guns should translate into laws banning them for all citizens.

Uh-Oh!  This ought to bring out the anti-gun’ners in force!  I know, I know, this elderly man should have reasoned with the two thugs who had him outnumbered.  Good riddance to bad rubbish.
