Palin cites defense costs caused by ethics cases
Published: July 10, 2009
ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Since Sarah Palin announced she is resigning as governor, she has cited the bombardment of ethics complaints against her and the financial burden of defending herself.
Palin says her family has racked up more than $500,000 in legal fees and that the state has poured about $2 million of taxpayer money into investigating the complaints.
Palin and her husband earned more than $200,000 last year, nowhere near enough to support a family of six and pay a mounting legal tab. But she has a book deal and can make millions with speaking tours.
The state provided a breakdown of the $1.9 million cost of the ethics complaints this week, with the "Troopergate" scandal, staff lawyer research and public-records requests making up a large portion of the cost. Palin says the complaints distracted staff from doing real work for the state.
Sixteen ethics complaints have been filed. Three are pending; the others were dismissed.

The costs submitted by the state would have been paid anyway to the staff lawyers so it is a bogus claim that she is saving taxpayer money.
Three investigations still pending: a commenter yesterday tried to ram the lie that she had been cleared when in fact she has not been cleared.
She quit to free up the gravy train of speakers fees that she would not be allowed to accept while in office and to toe the line of her dominionist husband Todd who has probably been pouty-faced since the national disgrace of her selection for VP candidate. And to host the Cheney summer vacation (true fact!).
Granted, this story is a case of nothing after nothing with no credibility: come on, the opinings of a jilted teenager?. But it is fun watching the contortions of the palin apologists!
I’m not a “Dem” but a fiscally conservative independent. Certainly Dodd should be looked at. My point is that the GOP failed during the Bush years - and now - to deliver anything but third tier personalities and minds who can’t stand the heat and do one thing and say another. Dem’s too of course.
OK, Willi, I believe you’ve said what also troubles the Democrats, even more so. Maybe you have a short memory!
This also applies to the Dems. It’s an equal opportunity problem.
Furthermore, if this problem had happened to a Dem, there would be no lawsuits and no defense expenses. Frank, Dodd, Reid, etc. did worse, did ILLEGAL deeds. But did you hear of any action against them???
Double standard here…
She has demonstrated that she does not have the maturity, backbone or even verbal skills for high office. The GOP young “leaders” are a line up of third class personalities with no ability to abide by what they say in public; they preach fiscal responsibility, but supported Delay and Cantor in their wasteful spending, others preach family values but cheat on the their families with other men or women. Others are hawks who have never served.
