Pilots who overshot target appeal license revocation
Published: November 5, 2009
WASHINGTON -- The Northwest Airlines pilots who overshot Minneapolis by 150 miles are appealing the revocation of their licenses to fly.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz said today the pilots have filed appeals with the safety board.
The Federal Aviation Administration revoked the licenses of Captain Timothy Cheney of Gig Harbor, Wash., and First Officer Richard Cole of Salem, Ore., saying they put the 144 passengers of Northwest Flight 188 in serious danger.
Cheney and Cole told investigators they lost track of time and place while working on their laptops. They failed to communicate with air traffic controllers for 91 minutes, raising national security concerns.

No one got hurt. In an era where airline companies are struggling to find qualified pilots, I think a suspension is in order for the two pilots. Revoking their license is the classic overreaction that sounds good but it is too harsh becuase in the end no one was hurt by their actions. I would rather have a pilot with 30,000 hours of flying experience with a little mistake rather than a rookie with only a couple hours flying my plane.
I agree. They should never be allowed to fly again.
I hope their licenses are never restored. These two clowns were probably watching porn while putting their passengers at great risk. Lucky nothing happened.
