Wis. dealer who sold accessories to Pa. shooter also sold guns to Cho

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- An online weapons dealer who sold guns and accessories to those who carried out massacres at Virginia Tech and Northern Illinois University also sold accessories to a man who killed three women and wounded nine other people at a Pittsburgh-area health club.

TGSCOM Inc. last year sold an empty Glock 9 mm magazine and magazine loading apparatus to George Sodini, who shot up a Collier Township, Pa., health club Tuesday. TGSCOM owner Eric Thompson said yesterday that the sale was legal and his company did nothing wrong.

It was not immediately clear if Sodini used the accessories during his attack. Sodini fatally shot himself after the attack.

Seung-Hui Cho used a .22-caliber handgun bought from TGSCOM in his attack at Virginia Tech in April 2007, in which 32 people were killed. Stephen Kazmierczak, who killed five people in an NIU classroom before killing himself in February 2008, bought two empty 9 mm Glock magazines and a Glock holster through a TGSCOM site.

Thompson's company is based in Green Bay.

Thompson visited the Virginia Tech campus after the attack to support a local chapter of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus. And after the NIU attack, he said the Web site Kazmierczak visited saw a spike in traffic.

Andrew Goddard of Richmond, whose son Colin was shot and wounded at Virginia Tech, said Thompson "needs to have some sort of social responsibility."

"I take issue on the basic principle that he's selling something that doesn't have a legitimate use outside of stalking and killing people," Goddard said.

Someone who wants to buy a gun from an online site must first find a licensed firearms dealer in their home state who will receive it and conduct the proper background checks. The local dealers earn a fee for processing paperwork and conducting background checks.

Thompson said the company complies with all state and federal laws.

Thompson said attacks like Tuesday's underscore the need for people to protect themselves because police can't respond in time to crises, he said.

"This story should be about the victims and the tragedy and how to prevent things like this in the future," Thompson said.

"This guy was a sick individual with stunted social skills and a hatred of women, the worst kind of person," he said. He told The Associated Press by phone that it's unfortunate "crazies and mad men catch all the news" but they could just as well shop at Wal-Mart.

Sodini did not have a criminal record, and he legally bought the guns he used, police said.

The funerals for two of the victims will be held today, and a third will be held Wednesday. Killed were Heidi Overmier, 46, of Carnegie; Jody Billingsley, 37, of Mount Lebanon; and Elizabeth Gannon, 49, of Pittsburgh.

Hundreds of mourners gathered at a funeral home yesterday to pay respects to Overmier and Gannon, whose bodies were in separate rooms across the hall from each other. The Rev. Ed Saxson, Overmier's former pastor, called on churches to reach out to the "George Sodinis of the world . . . before they reach such a stage of hopelessness that this becomes their out."

Four of the women wounded in the shooting rampage remain hospitalized.

Two are listed in fair condition at Allegheny General Hospital. Two other women are being treated at UPMC Mercy Hospital. One remained in serious condition yesterday, while the other is listed as fair.

Police say Sodini didn't know the victims.

In a chilling diary posted on the Internet, he complained that he hadn't had a girlfriend since 1984 and hadn't slept with a woman in 19 years. The online diary revealed that he felt ignored by women and had an "exit plan" to avenge his rage.

I choose to not live in fear.

But that is the problem because by your own admittion you are now living in fear. Fear of not going to certian places, Fear of not argueing with people and standing up for your beliefs, fear by keeping your doors locked and house brightly lite, fear of not knowing who is around you or who you can associate with.  You see where your fear is and you don’t even know it.  You restrict where you live, where you go and who you associate with out of fear of what others will do to you.  So YES you do live a life controlled by crimminals that I do not. I go where I want, talk to who I want and don’t make a jail of my house. Why because I know I can defend myself in any situation.  so you are now more affected by crimminals than you think.  Thank you for proving the differance between you, the anti gun, and me, who supports gun rights.

dub,
I believe we had already addressed this topic of personal protection and “choosing” where to live, etc.  It was brought out that not everyone can live, work, etc., in a “safe” area.  Even if you can call the police, if it is a life threatening emergency, not even a criminal one, maybe a heartache, a fall, etc., good luck getting help in time.  If one is comfortable with having a gun(s), one should have the right to have a gun(s).

Your argument of you live in a safe neighborhood, so everyone should live in a safe neighbrohood and feel safe is a rather silly idea to put forward.  Obviously, if everyone could be safe, they would choose that option.  I live in a safe neighborhood, too.  I do not feel threatened by violence, but I do not believe that I or a neighbor should not have a gun, as long as your a responsible, lawful citizen.

RichmondDave-

I choose to not live in fear. That is no way to live life. I believe that most people are “good”, and that violence, although real, can be minimized by personal choice of careful selection of people, places, and actions.

For example, you will not see me on Jeff Davis Hwy in the city after a certain time. You will not see me arguing with people (unless in this forum, of course :-), causing tempers to flare. You will not see me associating with people who tend to bring drama with them. I keep my doors locked, house brightly lit, and I know my neighbors. If I see shady people, i report them or even take a picture of them with my phone in case law enforcement wants a description.

When society begins taking matters in our own hands and feels there is no protection for its’ citizens, we are on the way to anarchy. It is sad that so many Americans feel this is the current state of affairs.

dubiousthoughts,

If someone like Usain Bolt (the world’s fastest man - 200 meters in 19.59 seconds) takes a machete and decides to chase you, I think you’re in trouble.

dubious thoughts you are like thetruth and afraid to answer a simple question. To bad that makes you look like what you say is unsupportable. Yes you can run from a machete but like the person in todays news who had his throat cut as people watched that doesn’t always work.  If someone comes up to you and asks for your money, you say no, he pulls a machete or knife you will get nowhere.  This is a proven fact that you will freeze in your tracks because you will not believe this is happening to you.  So yes you can outrun a machete but not in a crime situation.
Notice the number one state on your list.  Notice the top 5 on your list.  Three of them have the toughest laws in the coutry as far as gun ownershop goes.  Number 48 on your list is Vermont which by your own admission has a liberal gun ownership law. My point proven.  Thank you
People in Texas are terrified of the Mexican gangs because they are better armed than the citizens of the US. (Doesn’t Mexico have stricter gun ownership laes than Texas?)  Arm the Texas citizens like the crimminal gangs and give them free reign like the gangs have and see who is terrified of who?

I stand by my right to defend myself and my family in accordance to the second amendment of the Constitution of the United States.  I will defend it against all agressors both foreign and domestic.  Guess who the “domestic” are?

Dubiousthoughts,
A European Commission research has revealed that the United Kingdom has one of the highest rates of violence in the world, making it the violent crime capital of Europe.  A breakdown of the statistics, revealed that violent crime in the UK had increased from 652,974 offences in 1998 to more than 1.15 million crimes in 2007, which meant there were over 2,000 crimes recorded per 100,000 population in the UK, the Telegraph reports.  In the USA, the violent crime rate in 2007 was 467 per 100,000. http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/cius2007/data/table_01.html

I believe that refutes yoru statement that fewer guns leads to fewer violent cirmes.

RichmondDave- I am fairly confident I can run away from a machete-weilding robber. I can’t say the same from someone with a gun.

Secondly, if you think voilent crime would rise if handguns were illegal, you are misinformed. Sure, some people will always get guns somehow, but the overall violent crime rate would drop. We are far too lazy a society to do much other than point a gun anyway :-)

As far as me being anti-constitutional, I am NOT. I merely said that we need to incorporate the evolution of society and understand that the founding fathers faced different challenges 200 years ago, some which are not applicable anymore. The Declaration of Independence did not include then-called Negroes, which has subsequently changed in perspective. I believe the original intent of the second amendment is of a earlier time as society was far different back then and different laws were needed.

To ASSUALT criminals…come on. You didn’t know that. I have one for just such a purpose.

Recently I noticed a sign in front of a local Chesterfield gun shop that proclaimed that they sell “assault” rifles.  I don’t believe people hunt animals with assault rifles, they only hunt people.  Therefore, why would the gun shop sell them? Just a thought.
