N.J. man with 78 driver’s license suspensions pleads guilty to 15th DUI
Published: July 1, 2009
MORRISTOWN, N.J.— A New Jersey man whose driver’s license has been suspended 78 times has pleaded guilty to his 15th drunken-driving offense.
Shaun Campbell of East Rutherford told a judge Tuesday that he had been drinking “quite a bit” of beer when he crashed his SUV head-on into a pickup in April. The truck’s occupants, a man and his 4-year-old daughter, were not seriously hurt.
The 40-year-old Campbell’s blood-alcohol level was .288 percent, more than triple the state’s legal limit.
Authorities say Campbell’s license has been suspended 78 times in 22 years. He still faces drunken-driving charges in two other New Jersey cities.
Prosecutors are seeking a maximum prison term of nearly three years at Campbell’s sentencing in August. He will lose his license for at least 10 more years.

LOL @ those who say things such as “take this guy and put him to sleep…“
UMMM—Isn’t That the sort of thing you might want to consider, say—OH, I don’t know…after the 3rd or Fourth DUI he committed? Or, maybe, after the first couple of dozen times he was caught driving under suspension??? Truth is—guys like this genius are milk cows; they’re the heart of the Police Industry in NJ. Mr. Campbell and others like him are worth Alot of money to the municipalities and bureacracies.
As someone who sees these guys on a daily basis, I can tell you how adept they are stopping drivers and handing out tickets. Last week, when a small branch of PNC bank was robbed, however, there were 4 or 5 localities, along with the NJ State Police out in full force, looking for a guy who fled on foot, with $8000. At right around four pm—prime speed patrol hour.
It was sorta fun to watch them for awhile, but then I became disgusted when I remembered how over-policed, over-taxed and under-served are the citizens of NJ.
It’s Pathetic, really.
HOLY COW!!!!
I don’t think a long jail sentenced will stop this individual from driving with or without a license, unless he’s in for life. Unfortunately ( or fortunately) if he hasn’t killed anyone the max in NJ is 3 yrs. In VA he would’ve had his license permanently revoked, done jail, paid heavy fines but again I doubt that would’ve stopped him. What to do? I say chain gang for the rest of his life, 18 hour days/7days, this way he repays the tax payers for all the court fees and wasted time spent on him.
New Jersey courts must be very lenient in whatever area this guy lives or as someone stated he must have a darn good lawyer. Here in Virginia he would have lost his license for a indefinite period of time and pulled some serious jail time.
I don’t think suspending or revoking his license would do any good. He’s already had it suspended 78 times and it hasn’t stopped him.
I don’t know what can be done about this guy except lengthy jail time.
The bottom line is the local government makes a lot of money off people like this. This guy is an economic stimulus package.
He still hasn’t lost his license permanantly. He will get his license back in 10 years. In a big city with public transportation, losing your license isn’t that big of deal.
Should change the law to be able to charge drunk drivers for assault and battery for the people that get injured and vandalism for the cars they wreck.
And this guy didn’t have a “lockout” device on his vehicle at the very least? I can’t imagine why a habitual offender wasn’t incarcerated.. this case seems to be pretty extreme with a total lack of regard for human life… I mean, One DUI? ok.. you didn’t realize “how much” you had.. but 15..sheesh
Wonder if the people he hit can sue the dickens out of him. Of course if he was driving without a license he was also probably driving without insurance. But if they can bankrupt him and them have the judge throw him in jail, it’s a start.
Makes me wonder who knows who or who knows what about who? 15 DUI’S? 78 license suspensions? Geez…
Why do we waste our money housing these people. Put them to sleep before they kill someone.
