WASHINGTON — Barack Obama, sworn in today as nation’s first African-American president, called for “a new era of responsibility” to restore America at home and abroad.

Obama, the nation’s 44th president, said the bedrock American values of courage and honesty will help the nation weather wars and the financial crisis.

In a 19-minute inaugural address interrupted at least six times by applause, he called on the nation to set aside partisan divisions and mend a shattered economy and peacefully conclude wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Speaking at the West front of the U.S. Capitol before a National Mall crowd estimated at more than 2 million, Obama did not minimize the nation’s difficulties, but pledged that Americans will persevere.

“Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real.  They are serious and they are many.  They will not be met easily or in a short span of time.  But know this, America—they will be met,“ he said.

The gravity of the challenges means that Americans must transcend partisanship, Obama said.

“On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn-out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics,“ Obama said. “We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things.“

Obama, sworn in by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr., also warned the nation’s adversaries that the United States will be firm, but is prepared to forge peaceful relationships.

“We are ready to lead once more,“ Obama said.

The new president said that America’s “patchwork heritage” is a strength, not a weakness.

“We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus—and non-believers,“ he said. “We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace.“

Obama called on Americans to reaffirm the nation’s bedrock values of “hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism,“ adding that “what is required of us now is a new era of responsibility.“

Such values are “the meaning of our liberty and our creed—why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall,“ Obama said.

Referring to his father, who was born in Kenya, Obama said those values are “why a man whose father less than 60 years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath.“

Obama recapped many of the themes he emphasized through his campaign: disciplined federal spending, energy independence, a revived economy and openness in government.

The swearing-in was rich with symbolism, coming one day after the nation observed the birth of civil-rights martyr the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. King, in a famous speech delivered in 1968, spoke of “a mountaintop” of equality and freedom.

Today, King’s longtime associate, the Rev. Joseph Lowery, in a benediction, alluded to King’s remarks and to Obama’s presidency,

“As we leave this mountaintop, help us hold onto this fellowship,“ Lowery said.

naturalmystic-How can whites, millions of whom voted for Obama, not take as a slam, a statement saying can they get finally it right relating to blacks, reds, browns and yellows.  Nice of Lowery to stereotype all whites into one block.  Many whites have been “getting it right” for years but statements like this don’t help any advancement.

Michelle O. looked like she picked her wardrobe today from the Salvation Army salvage store!  Ugly yellow brocade-looking outfit, inappropriate for 20 degree weather, with her coat flapping open in the breeze.  Most of the other women in the party looked appropriate for the day.  Also, her jewelry was inappropriate for a noon dress-up occasion.  Her gloves were gosh ugly avacado green with that yellow outfit.  She usually dresses pretty well, but her brain was still in Chicago when she picked out the outfit.  Horrible beginning.

Michelle, please don’t try to look like Jackie K., be yourself!

Despite the similarities in our names and points of view, james and I are not related.
Thanks for the info on Timmy—I hope that he had a dark suit on.  He’s always disgracing the rest of us Catholics.

Anyoine notice Michelle Obama? Who told her that dress looked good? She looks like she’s going to a toga party.

Did anyone notice Governor Timmy? He got so excited when Barry-O took the oath he peed his pants!

Let the four years of ignorance and bad policy begin.

And for those of you who think Barry-O is MY president, I use the liberal mentality for that. Liberals wouldn’t hesitate to tell you Bush wasn’t their president. Barry-O is definitively NOT my president. Small p on that, folks.

naturalmystic:  If Rev Lowery is representative of BO’s attiture on day one, there ain’t going to be no positive change.  It’s people like you who need an attitude adjustment, so quit giving me personal advice on how to spend my time.  I repeat—Lowery’s remarks were inappropriate, as were the published remarks of Reverend Wright.  If you can’t understand that, your “mystic” head must be stuck in a very un-”natural” place.

Jimbo: I do not agree that Reverend Lowery was using “victimology crap” as you may call it. Let’s not turn the inuguaration benediction into another point the finger “Rev. Wright” type of discussion. Instead let’s focus on the bigger picture. In addition, you have to give Obama more than one day to bring the much needed “change” we need in this country. Change is not going to happen overnight..heck maybe not even in four years.. but it will come. In the meantime, I encourage you to divert all of your “negative” energy towards a common good instead of spending your tuesday nights venting on RTD. Like I said before, you sound bitter and need to get overself. Whether you like it or not, BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA is your president.

naturalmystic:  Lowery’s comments were inappropriate!  Obama promised change—this is more of the same-old same-old victimology crap.

Jimbo-Rev. Lowery was using the same words used by many African Americans during the Civl Rights Era. You sound bitter. Get over yourself.

You should have included ‘Reverend’ Lowery’s final sentences in your article.  His racially charged remarks, said like an immature school boy would, set the tone for the new Obama Nation.  What a disgrace.
