FAIRFAX — President Barack Obama said Monday a new GI Bill for those who fought in Iraq and Afghanistan is an investment in both a new generation of veterans and the future of America.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill, sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., is the most comprehensive education benefit offered to veterans since President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the original GI Bill for World War II veterans in 1944. In the next decade, $78 billion is expected to be paid out under it.

“We do this not just to meet our moral obligation to those who sacrificed greatly on our behalf, on behalf of the country,“ said Obama, speaking at a celebration rally at George Mason University. “We do it because these men and women must now be prepared to lead our nation in the peaceful pursuit of economic leadership in the 21st century.“

Webb and former Sen. John Warner, R-Va., were among the supporters on hand at George Mason.

The maximum benefit under the law rolled out Saturday will allow every eligible veteran, serviceman and woman, Reservist and National Guard member to attend a public college or university for free for four years. They are also eligible for a monthly housing stipend and up to $1,000 a year for books.

Those who attend a private institution or graduate school can receive financial assistance up to the cost of a public college in the state. About 1,100 schools are offering additional scholarships matched by the VA.

Obama noted that many of the 1.9 million troops who have deployed in support of the recent wars joined the military knowing they’d have to go and fight somewhere. He said military members have endured multiple tours in grueling combat.

“The contributions that servicemen and women can make to our nation do not end when they take off that uniform,“ Obama said. “We owe a debt to all who served and when we repay that debt to those bravest Americans among us, then we are investing in our future.“

Service members who agree to serve four more years in the military can opt to transfer the benefit to their spouse or kids. It’s anticipated that nearly a half million veterans or their family members could participate in the first year.

More than 100,000 claims have already been processed, and more than 25,000 service members have applied to use the transfer benefit.

The legislation has been widely praised by veterans groups, but there have been concerns that universities and the VA could be overwhelmed, in part, because of the complexity of the benefit. There have been complaints that veterans attending private schools in states that keep public tuition low face a huge disparity in what they receive.

As a nation we could never do enough to thank our servicemen for the job that they do.

That is not what my comments are about.

The Bush administration and Senator McCain proposed a very similar bill.
They were the ones who included the transferability of the benefits to family members.
Webb and Co. faught that feature for months.
Most citizens don’t even seem to be aware that there WAS another bill.

It was the same with the SCHIP bill. Headlines-
BUSH VETOES BILL FOR POOR CHILDREN.

Bush threathened to veto the bill because states like NY and New Jersey wanted to include families making $65,000 a year.
guess who gets pushed out of a program with that kind of cap?

Right, poor children

Sometimes you just gotta read a little more than the headlines.

There are stupid policies pushed every day on both sides of the aisles.
It is up to us to “we the people” to ferret out the truth.

How can Obama give them this amazing benefits package to help them adjust to life after the war? He’s a Democrat and we all know that democrats don’t support the toops. This is probably som kind of socialist trick to get these young men and women used to standing in breadlines.

You know who supports the troops? George Bush. Remember when George Bush and Dick Cheney used to talk about supporting the troops? They talked about it ALL the time. They even got them body armor! ...by 2006. If you’re a marine in a hot combat zonem, which would you rather have? Body armor or a college degree?

One who voluntarily places his or her life on the line for the Country and endures the hardships required of our servicemen and women, clearly deserves assistance with improving his or her opportunities in life through higher education. Every service member is now a volunteer. In the process, the whole country benefits and we meet our moral obligations to those who’ve sacrificed to preserve our freedom. Most college administrators will confirm that veterans are among the most diligent and dedicated students. Rather than a “hand-out” I’d prefer to think of the service members’ educational benefits as an investement which will pay handsome dividends in the future.

Howard,
So you believe that educational benefits to vets is a hand out? They suck on the government teat?

Shame on you. Shame on you.

I am amazed at how few of my fellow citizens have a clue. Most of these comments are hateful nonsense with intentionally wrong data. For example, this disabled vet has not been even remotely fond of any of our presidents for many years, but I appreciated more a good, determined commander rather than the one which gave bigger handouts. We were there to serve our country, not suck on the government teat.

God help us all, but mostly many of the previous commenters who were even more disgraceful.

I’m active duty military, and I’m so thankful for President Obama and Sen Webb. Although Bush opposed the new GI bill and wanted lower pay raises, Sen Webb and the Democrats in Congress fought to keep this alive. I have twin daughters that start college in 2010 and I can transfer this benefit to them. The GI bill along with other scholarships and matches will cover the majority their education.

Well it’s the only sensible bill that Obama has passed that is not a waste of our tax dollar!

suzn123,

I was just comparing what has been accomplished during Obama’s first 200 days with what Bush didn’t do during his.  Bush didn’t have a handle on his national security situation, causing him to start an unnecessary war and leading to the death and maiming of incredible numbers of young men and women.

Maybe if George had made a different decision on that day, none of this would have happened.
