Cantor, McCain announce initiative

Rep. Eric I. Cantor, R-7th, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., announced the launch today of a new organization, National Council for a New America, to solicit ideas for dealing with problems facing the nation.

In a conference call with reporters, McCain described Cantor as "the driving force" behind the organization.

Cantor said the council wants to bring Democrats, independents and Republicans to a national discussion of issues, although the initial participants are Republican leaders in Congress.

Through forums, Internet technology and other means, the council wants to start "a national conversation" about the economy, health care, education, energy and national security, Cantor said.

Cantor and McCain denied the council is a Republican forum designed to rebrand the party, which has suffered recent electoral losses.

"No one appreciates more than I do" the party's recent election difficulties, said McCain, who lost the presidential race last year.

going “all out conservative” is why the GOP is out of power. You cant win elections catering only to the far right neocons. republicans have lost any credibility as being fiscal conservatives. I agree you cant dwell on the past but people arent going to forget the past eight years any time soon.

Left leaning Republicans trying to placate to a new radical Democrat Party have ruined the GOP.
Why Cantor would partner up with one of those Republicans responsible for the party’s decline is beyond comprehension.
The only way the GOP can gain power back and save this country from Marxism is to go all-out Conservative.

I am baffled by people so quick to demean John McCain, just as I am by those who write off the GOP. This call for engagement and contribution is a good thing, redundant though it may be.  The idea of The Congress actually living in their districts and states on a continuing basis is a good idea.

The author of this article appears to be publishing a PR piece on this scam everyday. Do we get another one tomorrow?
I think he wrote a couple of weeks ago about the Thousands of Tea bagging straight people protesting in the rain in downtown Richmond. Will the RTD expire in conjunction with the Goposoarus’ passing?

bholl. I have even a better idea.  Let the states pay the salary and operating expenses of the Senators and Representatives.  Let them know what they are getting right off the start.  No federal salary, medical care or retirement.  No perks or anything else.  If the state doesn’t pay for it they don’t get it.  Why should the Federal government pay for someone who is a state employee as he was elected by that state and not the Federal government?  What do you think would happen then?

dogtown, Great point, you are exactly right.  Scott saves lots of money and lots of work with a gerrymandered district.  I guess at some point the dems and repubs sectioned out safe districts and worked together to guarantee that the voters have little choice.  Imagine that.

I have an idea.  Lets make ALL of these guys come home.  Lets make them live and work in the districts they represent. They can vote and caucus on the internet “tubes” and we’ll fly them (in coach) to DC twice a year. September for budget work and in the winter for the State of the Union.  We would be doing these guys a favor taking them out of DC with the lobbyists, the hookers and the $400.00 dinners. There is a lot more transparency in your home town than in DC.

Oh, and think of the money we would save.  In fact, since they are living at home, they can live on the salaries from their real jobs and we can pay a much smaller fee for them representing us. Bet we’d have a lot less silly laws passed, huh?

New ideas—John McCain? I don’t think so. The only thing constructive he could do is retire and fade away somewhere.  As for Cantor at least he had the sense to embrace high speed rail recently other than that he’s “McCain Light.“

BHOLL referred to Cantor having been elected in a “gerrymandered” district. Without intending to express any opinion about Bobby Scott or Cantor, Bobby Scott most certainly was elected as a result of a “gerrymandered” district that extends from Tidewater to Richmond.

Virginia General Assembly, again this session, failed the citizens of Virginia by refusing to consent to non-partisan redistricting.

John and Eric want new ideas?  I have one:  both of you should resign.  John McCain showed us exactly what he thought of this country when he had the audacity to tell us with a straight face that Sarah Palin was qualified to be president.  Eric Cantor demonstrates leadership by acting like a brat, saying no to everything, whether it makes sense or not.  Boys, take your ball and go home—no one is interested in playing with you.

So you wonderful, only we are right liberal, holler at the Republicans for being the party of “NO”.  Yousay you want bipartisanship but never include any other ideas by anybody.  You ram all the socialist giveaways down everybodies throat.  Someone other than you comes up with an idea and all they get is harrasment, name calling and nasty remarks from you.  Now who is the party of NO.  Guess we will have to see in 2 years during the mid term elections.  What the Democratic cantidates for Governor are behind.  How could that be as the Democrats are the only ones right these days.
