Obama approval rating falls below 50 percent
President Barack Obama's approval rating has fallen below 50 percent for the first time in polling by Quinnipiac University as U.S. voter discontent grows over the war in Afghanistan.
Obama's job approval rating fell to 48 percent in the Nov. 9-16 survey of registered voters nationwide by the Hamden, Conn.-based university, with 42 percent polled saying they disapproved of the job he is doing.
"In politics, symbols matter, and this is not a good symbol for the White House," Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement.
Obama's approval rating was 59 percent in a Quinnipiac survey conducted Feb. 25 to March 2.
The percentage of people who approve of Obama's handling of the economy fell to 43 percent, down from 47 percent in an October Quinnipiac poll.
The percentage who say they disapprove of the way Obama is handling the war in Afghanistan rose to 49 percent in the latest survey, up from 42 percent last month. Thirty-eight percent approved of his handling of the war, compared with 40 percent last month.
The November survey of 2,518 registered voters also found that the percentage of those saying that fighting the war in Afghanistan was the right thing to do has fallen below 50 percent, to 48 percent. That is down from 52 percent in October.
Overall, the new numbers on Afghanistan show an almost across-the-board erosion of support for the war, Brown said.
Obama is weighing a request by his commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Stanley McChrystal, to increase the U.S. force of 68,000 by as many as 40,000 personnel next year.
A plurality of voters surveyed, 47 percent, backed sending more troops to Afghanistan, compared with 42 percent who opposed the plan.
The survey has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

recruit: Gotcha! I was aping the ‘liberal line’. This is Obama’s baby now. The bloom is off the rose for those who think and observe.
“Oh, let’s just put the blame where it lies. Obama’s approval ratings are the result of 8 years of failed Bush…..“ -Dave
I think you meant to say was 6 years of a liberal congress approving things then claiming they didn’t. For example John Kerry and how he “never” voted for the troops to be sent to Iraq. Too bad the docet proves other wise. if someone needs to fix this it is the democrats who need to not be greedy and give back to THE TAXPAYERS like myself for their stupidity, and lack of integrity.
I agree 100% Proud, he is just a man and I’m sure when it’s all said and done with we can say he did the best job he could have. I just hope it’s enough to bring us a little bit out of our slump.

Sorry notwho, but Rasmussen agrees that the ratings are under 50% and his poll has been the most accurate.
Yes, Rasmussen and Zogby are arguably the best, most accurate polls out there. Their pre-election polls were darn near spot on to the final results that came in.
I’d say the drop in approval ratings is coming from the Obama-hype starting to settle down and come back to reality. He’s just a politician, not the second coming of Christ like most want him to be.
who cares about him. all i know is i got screwed over by his policies and so will my parents. our issue right now is our financial issue in the country. Not raising taxes and nationally spending. Health care is not the governments issue either. they are to protect our rights, NOT give people health care since they do not have it. his whole administration is rather corrupted and full of lies. Thanks to him my friend no longer has a job.
Point being, his approval rating is being based on his ability to rebound our economy. People are not seeing instant results, which is 100% impossible. I work for the banking industry and I can see the improvements being made, even though it is making my job quite difficult. I have faith as the economy continues to move north, his approval rating will too.
And no, I’m not a liberal, I just want cohesion and for the our economic state to improve, for my childrens sake.

Sorry Quinnipiac, but your poll is an outlier. Obama’s approval is about 52 percent per http://www.pollster.com/polls/us/jobapproval-obama.php *consensus*. And it has actually begun to tick upwards again. His favorable ratings are even higher, in the upper 50s: http://www.pollster.com/polls/us/fav-obama.php
When George Bush was reelected, his approval rating was just below 50% - and it went downhill from there.
