Palin: ‘Politically speaking, If I die, I die’

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Sarah Palin says she’s not a quitter, she’s a fighter, but adds that, politically speaking, “if I die, I die. So be it.“

The Alaska governor spoke in taped interviews on ABC, NBC and CNN broadcast Tuesday morning.

She told CNN that “all options are on the table” for her future.

But told ABC’s “Good Morning America” that she recognizes she might not have political staying power after her surprise resignation Friday, which came just as she had been expected to elevate her national profile ahead of a possible 2012 GOP presidential run.

“I said before ... ‘You know, politically speaking, if I die, I die. So be it,‘“ she said.

Speaking in fishing waders from the town of Dillingham, Palin said her administration has been paralyzed by fending off frivolous lawsuits.

“I’m not going to take the comfortable path. I’m going to take the right path for the state,“ she said of her resignation, which she characterized as a matter of progressing in an unconventional way.

“That caught people off guard. ... It’s out of the box and unconventional. That’s what we are as Alaskans and certainly how I am as a public servant.“

Palin said she doesn’t think she needs a title to affect “positive change,“ but added that she can’t see herself being totally out of public service.

Palin is returning to the public eye four days after her bombshell announcement, albeit in a place far removed from the glare of the national media: in a remote fishing village 30 miles north of the Arctic Circle.

Palin was scheduled to appear in Kotzebue to sign a bill designed to bring public safety officers to small towns. Kotzebue, a town of about 3,000 people, is 550 miles northwest of Anchorage and lies on a spit of sand at the end of a peninsula.

There has been speculation that she has some legal issue that is not yet known to the public. But her lawyer told The Associated Press on Monday that she has no legal problems whatsoever, and simply is tired of the hostile political climate, legal bills and other distractions.

“She is leaving now because I think she believes that she has become the issue, rightly or wrongly, with all these ethics complaints and with the issues involving the Legislature, the combativeness they’ve been demonstrating toward her since she returned from the campaign,“ Thomas Van Flein said.

“I think she believes it’s in the best interest of the state to progress forward, for her to move on to other issues.“

Palin has become a lightning rod for partisan politics in Alaska since her return from the 2008 presidential campaign after John McCain selected her as his running mate for the GOP ticket. She has racked up an estimated $500,000 in legal bills defending the flurry of ethics complaints, including one filed Monday that alleges she is violating ethics law by taking per diem payments when she stays in her Wasilla home instead of the governor’s mansion in Juneau.

In addition, her relationship with Democrats in the state Senate — once among her staunchest allies — deteriorated in the last session.

At the state Capitol in Juneau, the “Time to Make a Difference” clock that counted the time left in Palin’s term was taken down from the wall outside her office. And people from around the country called up her office to inquire about the situation, as did a few cruise ship tourists who made the trek to the Capitol.

The young woman at the desk outside Palin’s office was busy answering phones.

“Yes, she is getting swamped with e-mails,“ the woman tells one caller. “Yes, they do get forwarded to the appropriate person.“

“Unfortunately, we are having a back load of e-mails so it will take some to get a response,“ she tells another.

Where is she? Why is she stepping down? When is her last day? Why so soon?

The tour guide tried to politely answer the questions for the tourists when she could, but for the most part had no answers.

Some of the visitors left Palin messages in a guest log.

“Sarah — Please Stay!“ one person wrote.

Kathy Waldo-Gilbert, a registered Democrat from Iowa who was on her honeymoon in Alaska, said she was especially disappointed because she believes that Palin’s early departure from the governor’s job will make it harder for other women who want to be taken seriously in high-profile positions. Waldo-Gilbert voted Republican for the first time in last year’s presidential election.

“When things get hard, you stick around,“ she said.

Erika Fagerstrom, executive residential manager at the governor’s mansion, said Palin and her family will be missed. Even though Palin lived most of the time at her home in Wasilla, she spent “quite a bit” of time at the stately columned mansion near the capitol building, she said.

“We are sad to see her go. They are a great family,“ she said.

Palin will be succeeded by Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who has announced he will seek to retain the office in the 2010 election.

State Rep. John Harris, a former House speaker and Republican from Valdez, announced Monday that he’s preparing to file paperwork with state election officials in a bid for governor.

One other point, I guess unless you have a Northern liberal college degree, like kennedy, clinton, b. frank, etc. you are not qualified for a congressional or presidential post?  Of course not mention is ever made of how one’s family money may have gotten them into an ivy league school or even what grades they obtained.  The elitism of congressional dems that they know what is best for all of us is disgusting.  The lastest, b. frank wants to use the “profits” from the Tarp plan to give acorn billions!  What profits, banks have not paid back loans much less any profits, but of course government does not understand profit, in fact the current administration seem to distain “profits”.

The ethics violation complaints seem to have come up once Palin was in the national arena.  I think a little research will show much of this was the result of outside influences, not the Alaska voters.  Remember how many national news/magazine/media showed up after McCain picked her for VP, digging for anything to pin against her.  And d.letterman has decided he can continue his disgusting comments.  No problem though, as the attackers were never going to be pulled to Palin’s side anyway.

robmo35..Your post shows that you are indeed confused. I post on several sites, it just happens that most of the media IS liberally Biased. Please read mrright’s post, Palin was cleared of ethics violations…A typical political ploy around election time, and the media drew you in like a typical sucker!

Fedup- I’m sure you didn’t hear from YOUR news sources but Ms. Palin was cleared of all 15 trumped up ethics charges. So was Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, who’s name was prominently in the paper around election time accused of the same BS.
You libs are soooo afraid of her and for good reason.I’m not saying she’s presidential material…. yet, but she’d be a darn sight better that Obama.
What’s he done so far but run the economy further into the ground, apologize to our and embrace our enemies, and disrespect our allies.
And you’ve got the nerve to call someone/anyone a hypocrite?
And BTW, abstinence is the only 100% means of birth control…unless you were hatched.

How does palin get a pass for ethics violations? How is it the accusers fault for pointing out her gross misconduct? If she had been above-board she never would have been elected.

Nudge nudge wink wink she quit.

Nobody is concerned about moral turpitude in the lame duck governors family. Their business, right?

It is the cruel hypocrisy of ABSTINENCE-ONLY preaching and ignorance of the very evidence that it doesn’t work! Just like the Cheneys getting OUTRAGED at bringing their (adult) daughter into the discussion when the Cheneys clearly sided with Focus on the Family anti gay politics.

It’s the blatant hypocrisy of the failed lame duck governor and her blind true believing dominionist followers that even makes alaskan politics interesting at this time.

BTW there is always room at a Democrat’s table. Can’t say that about the selfish repubs.

(robmo35 ) Thanks, I will always appreciate and respect another’s statements or opinion unless it’s with malicious intentions!

Too bad the media’s opinions have turned into news and the truth is I have met many CEO’s and Presidents of successful business with less education than a GED!

I respect them more because yes, they - we do have to work three times harder and yet are very successful! H

How many MBA’s have I seen waste MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars in the past few years at their jobs, or in the GOVERNMENT! Oh well.

Big $$$$$ with fortune 500 companies or own their own businesses, you take your choice. They just have very good secretaries “like lawyers do and politicians do” who are paid very well to correct their spelling, help with presentations or speeches.

Not to correct their knowledge or their God given wisdom!

Respectfully, JB

So I’m a bit confused by some of the statements here, namely JB’s and Fred’s. Are democrats socialists or nazis? You guys do realize that those political view points are diametrically opposed? Fred for all the complaints that you have about the “mainstream liberal media” you certainly like to use it’s forums to spew your bile.

More to the point of the article, I find it interesting that Palin is claiming that she is leaving office because of the costs incurred by ethics investigations. These investigations have been called by private citizens using a state ethics law that Palin herself championed. If this is the real reason why she resigned, and I choose to take her at her word, it’s odd that her own legislation would be her undoing, and could indicate a significant lack of foresight on her’s and her advisors’ parts.

While I am certain that she will play a major role for the Republican party in the future, especially since this current incarnation of the GOP takes it’s leadership cues from people who either no longer hold or never have held elected office, and who have no accountability for their statements, nor make decisions that could seriously impact people’s lives, it is very unlikely that she will hold elected office again, and even less likely that she will hold this nation’s top office.

One thing you have to admire about the Democrats and their media allies is their ability to smear and destroy just about anyone.

Palin’s modest background ( her parents were teachers) is presented as a reason she shouldn’t hold office and this from the party that supposedly represents teachers and the commonman.

Similiarly, that she attended several non Ivy league schools is proof of her limited intelligence yet Al Gore, who flunked out of Divinity School, is a man of science and Obama’s academic records are sealed.

The Democrats were foaming at the mouth over Bush’s foreign policy but once Obama takes office there is no more protest over the war in Iraq though US soldiers continue to die there and Obama has even escalated the war in Afghanistan conducting bombing raids in Pakistan! with impunity.

You can tell who the Democrats fear by the way they wield their propaganda machine of personal destruction. If Clinton’s gross personal misconduct was forgivable, Palin’s teenage daughter’s pregnancy was a sure of sign of moral turpitude in the Palin family.

If Palin got some free clothes to campaign in that is a sign of corruption but let Obama have a convicted felon pay for half of Obama’s
home and that is not an ‘issue’.

I sure glad I’m not a member of such a despicable bunch of hypocrites as constitutes the modern Democrat Party.
