S.C. Republican chairmen apologize for Jewish remark
Published: October 20, 2009
COLUMBIA, S.C. — Two Republican county officials in South Carolina are apologizing after they disparaged Jews in a newspaper op-ed in support of a fiscally conservative U.S. senator.
The county chairmen were supporting Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina. Chairmen Edwin Merwin of Bamberg County and Jim Ulmer of Orangeburg County wrote in their op-ed: “There is a saying that the Jews who are wealthy got that way not by watching dollars, but instead by taking care of the pennies and the dollars taking care of themselves.“
DeMint called the comment in the piece published by the Orangebug Times and Democrat thoughtless and hurtful. One of South Carolina’s two Jewish legislators, Democratic Sen. Joel Lourie, said he was outraged by the remark. He called on the chairmen to be removed.
State GOP Chairwoman Karen Floyd also called the statement absolutely unacceptable.

grizzman, like you, I’m still waiting for lou’s explanation of obama anti-semitism…cue the jeopardy music.
This should be entertaining…..please explain Obama’s anti-semitism to me.
Lou,
You hit the nail on the proverbial head.
I been looking at the big picture for long time and it ain’t pretty.
This stupidity gets national attention and feelings are at stake. Real anti-semitism can be found in the heart of Obama and his friends and lives are at stake.
drhoagie, before being so apt to defend our great ally Israel, do yourself some learning and google the U.S.S. Liberty. An incident all Americans should know about.
Dave: So you think that those things I mentioned are OK?
Let me spell it out in simple language for you then: calling someone who is Jewish a penny pincher is NEVER a compliment.
There’s MUCH more to this than people being “sensitive” or “too PC.“ More than I could explain in the comment section of a newspaper. And judging by your response, it’s not worth my time.
Dave, are you honestly saying that racism and discrimination do not exist and haven’t adversely affected people through the ages?? It’s absolutely not just a matter of people complaining that they’re “victims.“ I think you need to take another look at history, particularly this country’s despicable era of Jim Crow and how about the Nazis while you’re at it? Have you ever felt discriminated against in your life? It’s not exactly a nice feeling to bear the brunt of years and years of misconception and hate against others.
grizzman: Yeah, I see a trend. Lots of folks can not get through the day without getting the feeling they are being victimized by someone else. Too many people want to validate themselves by accusing others of racism, discrimination - you name it.
I’ve heard multiple people in Richmond refer to “jewing someone down” to get a better price on something. I suppose that’s OK too? I knew people in elementary school who had pennies thrown at them because they were Jewish. Are those of you that think what these officials said was OK seeing a trend here?
It’s disparaging because this is a stereotype of Jewish people that dates back centuries!
It is NOT OK and NOT acceptable to use. Language and beliefs like this are why people fear the GOP…the Grand OLD Party for sure…
