Snowe says health care bill a ‘good place to start’
Published: October 14, 2009
WASHINGTON — The only Republican who supported advancing the Senate Finance Committee’s version of health care reform says she believes that’s what constituents expected from her.
Interviewed Wednesday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,“ Sen. Olympia Snowe said she thought the measure which cleared her panel on a 14-9 vote was “a good place to start.“
The Maine Republican said there were elements of the legislation she still opposes. But she also said “the time has come to grapple with this issue that has eluded us for decades.“ Snowe said she still opposes a public option that one might eventually be allowed to “kick in” if private insurers do not live up to expectations for providing affordable, comprehensive health care.

First why are you saying “you” don’t have the votes? I am not a member of congress nor am I a democrat. I am still on the fence about having to buy health insurance because I can see the argument where people say its like buying car insurance for your car. However health insurance priced needs to be controlled first.
There won’t be a public option, you don’t have the votes despite a democratic supermajority.
You will be forced to buy insurance. How that will contain costs absent price controls is something only a politician can explain.
The public option is still needed and should not be left out or compromised.
Yeah its a good place to start alright.
START OVER that is.Seriously.
Start? They have been heaving and sighing over this since last spring. What about the ‘crisis’ situation prior to the Labor Day holiday when we just HAD to do something or the sky would fall? What about the 4 other health care bills? If this is a ‘start’, then what are they? Does Ms. Snowe want to explain to the public how the Baucus Bill with ‘no public option’ will be ‘reconciled’ to HR3200 that has one? Whatcha ya’ gonna do, Willis? We’ll have to guess since they are ‘behind closed doors’ today ‘fixing’ things. The Bible has something to say about things done in the shadows away from the light of day. You don’t have to be a Christian to see the truth in that.
