Tuesday's election was not a referendum on President Obama's policies, but a referendum on lazy Virginia Democrats camping out under a magnolia tree, sipping mint juleps in the sunny weather instead of going to the polls.

-- Ernest Irby, Henrico

I watched a news clip that showed an orphanage in Afghanistan full of happy girls and a few boys. A lot of private American donations have gone to fund similar places in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Guess what will happen to those girls if and when America backs out of another helpless country? We have done it before. For some reason, we never quite commit enough to finish what we start. This is a Christian-based country -- regardless of whether some prefer not to have that mentioned. Are we our brother's keeper? Yes.

-- Jo King, Mechanicsville

Bob McDonnell and the GOP won the governor's race. Must be a Southern tradition (like tar-and-feathering), where Republicans make a big mess and, if the Democrats can't fix it in a week, they give it back to the Republicans so they can make an even bigger mess.

-- Jeff Malo, Richmond

. . .

Now that the Republicans have won the gubernatorial races in both Virginia and New Jersey, I can just hear Obama now: "It's all George Bush's fault."

-- Joe Ondishko, Richmond

. . .

In less than one year, it appears that President Obama has greatly helped Virginia voters elect a Republican governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general -- something the GOP has been unable to accomplish in 12 years. He is fulfilling his promise: "It's a change we can live with."

-- Joseph W. A. Childress, Palmyra

. . .

I find it ironic that buildings on Ellis Island were once used to house communists and suspected communists. Now we not only allow them full access to the White House but they are appointed as special advisers to the president. Czars and Marxists belong back in Russia. While this country permits freedom of speech, it shouldn't allow communist propaganda access to our schools, institutions, and federal government.

-- Barbara Gestwick, Richmond

. . .

Do politicians really think that 10 or more phone calls will increase the chances I will vote for them? If you want my vote, leave me alone.

-- Linda Bell, Richmond

Most people probably do not realize that servers in the West End make low wages. They live on their tips. Please be thoughtful of our young people this holiday season.

-- Marleen Joyner, Henrico

. . .

The election is over and the people have spoken loudly. I would like to see the politicians do something Rep. Tom Bliley used to do after every election: When election signs continued to litter the landscapes, Bliley would pay $1 for every sign returned to his headquarters.

-- David Packett, Richmond

. . .

If you would like to know what heath care will be like under Obamacare, just look at how the federal government has managed the H1N1 vaccine program.

-- Ed McHarg, Midlothian

. . .

President Obama went to Dover Air Force Base in the middle of the night to salute the 18 fallen soldiers who came back from Afghanistan. Did he use it as a photo op because he knows he is unpopular with the military? I don't remember President Bush ever going there with all those photographers around him.

If getting worked up about Bush-Cheney gives you comfort and explains all evil in your mind, please feel free to stay there. If you’re stuck on January 2001 to January 2009, fine. If you need Bush-Cheney to deflect the problems our current president is responsible for, good, I hope it makes you perfectly happy. If you can’t admit that the new president has made significant mistakes (as have been outlined extensively) and being obsessed with Bush-Cheney’s mistakes are the most theraputic way to get you there, don’t worry, be happy.

If you think Bush-Cheney was the worst presidency, you must not have lived through Jimmy Carter - but, that’s O.K., you need your Emmanuel Goldstein to take your mind off our current problems.

I understand, you’re o.k. with a president who promises no lobbyists in his white house but puts them in there anyway. You’re o.k. with a president who promises transparency and posting all legislation on line for 5 days and we get neither. You’re o.k. with Obama twiddling his thumbs on ramping up our troop count in Afghanistan. You’re o.k. with Maoists and self avowed communists in advisory positions to the president - fine.

Using Bush and Cheney as an excuse for this level of government malfeasance (and non-feasance)is growing thinner and thinner by the minute. You cling to it though - don’t bother facing facts about the shortcomings of the new guy.

“Bush and company are a quick-fading memory”?

Some people act like a blind dog in a meat house.  Probably don’t believe in the holocaust neither.

The holocaust did happen and the worst presidency in U.S. history did just recently conclude its 8-year reign, although suffering from the debacle will be felt for years.

Forget about Bush and Cheney - they no longer hold office. The man who does hold office has been a colossal screw up, from voting for TARP to Auto Bailouts to the ACRON-SEIU enriching stimulus package to Skip Gates to treading water regarding Afghanistan to his handling of Major Nidal Malik Hasn (shout-outs before telling us not to jump to conclusions about the obvious).

With all of this incompetence, all pushed on us inside of a year, Bush and company are a quick-fading memory.

and the junior nitwit Bush never in 7 years went to Dover AFB; nor did Dick Cheney, the other coward who had other priorities for getting his five deferments during Vietnam mess.

Brave enough to send our troops to their deaths, but too coward to face their coffins at Dover.  If they make it to Heaven, I pray they are forced to look them in the eyes; those they killed for profit of their war profiteers.  Big oil, Halliburton, contractors.  Damn those evil two.

Mary Griffin - No photography was allowed under the Bush admin of fallen soldiers, even those who wanted photos. It was BANNED. Obama was simply paying his respects, and in an open, transparent manner, photographers are allowed wherever he goes. With respect to photo ops, Bush had many - “Mission Accomplished” all dressed up, “Thanksgiving”, etc.

“The election is over and the people have spoken loudly.“

Well 60% of the 39% that voted spoke loudly, so Gov. McDonnell can count on that support from the 23% of Virginians that got off their behinds to vote for him.  I wish him well, he is taking over at a tough time, but I for one am willing to wait a few months into 2010 before I start slamming him for not solving all the problems.

Jo King, you make a good point about the support of orphanges in Iraq and Afghanistan, but you miss some very important points:
Private donations have supported orphanges and poor families in Iraq, Afghanstan and other countries for decades, even when the US government was not spending any money to “help” these countries.  Organizations like ChildFund, CARE, Save the Children, World Vision, to name but a few have supported these needy folks DESPITE the interference of the US and other governments.  After the Russians left Afghanistan and the west stopped arming them and left them to rot, many organizations kept working away to help the poor and orphans, many of which were directly created by our Governments military aid.  Once we decide to quit bombing and shooting these people towards a better life and pull out our military, these agencies will still be there to pick up the pieces and help the “happy” orphans.  What you need to be asking is that we stop the fighting and start the helping, because as one that has visited many of these “happy” orphans, I can assure you that they deserve better from us all.

Obama campaigned on behalf of two candidates who lost their bids for governor. Joe Biden campaigned for the victorious democrat in New York’s 23rd district. Nah, that wasn’t a referendum on Obama - hahahaha.

“Are we our brother’s keeper?”... Apparently not when it comes to “me only” radical right-wingers as to affordable health care for all American citizens.

“I can just hear Obama now: “It’s all George Bush’s fault.“...Anyone else having hearing problems re: hearing Obama blaming Junior over the two governors’ race outcomes?  Listening to Limbaugh can cause people to imagine wild and crazy things.

“just look at how the federal government has managed the H1N1 vaccine program.”...Perhaps the Feds should not have contracted with four U.S. manufacturers, such as GlaxoSmithKline, to produce the product (delays from them are occurring); perhaps contracted entire business to overseas producers?

“President Obama went to Dover Air Force Base in the middle of the night to salute the 18 fallen soldiers who came back from Afghanistan…I don’t remember President Bush ever going there”...That’s because during his last 7 years as President all while fallen soldiers remains were being brought back and while he refused allowing the press to help us all honor them; Bush Junior never went to Dover…NEVER.  Ditto for war-monger Cheney. O.K. for Junior Bush and war-for-profit Cheney who caused those deaths to never go Dover, but bad Obama goes?
