Our advanced thinkers of today tell us that we must believe that no one is more important than anyone else. It is not democratic. We explain the past without mentioning important events and individuals but in terms of the new holy trinity of today's obsession of race, gender, and class. No wonder today's youth have no idea of our nation's history. -- Ken C. Slater, Chesterfield

Alas, no Bill Richardson as commerce secretary come Jan. 20. He had to fall on his sword over a phony New Mexico pay-for-play scandal during his governorship. I wonder who will wipe the Clinton fingerprints off the sword before President-elect Barack Obama's internal CSI staff investigation exonerates everybody involved? By most accounts, the New Year's Eve event in Carytown was a huge success. There were some who complained that the city was a cheapskate for charging $2 to attend the event. To those I say, look in the mirror when you say cheapskate. -- James R. Flinn, Richmond

Now that Gov. Tim Kaine will be working part-time as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, he will have less time to think of ways to raise our taxes. -- Steve Burton, Glen Allen

My new year's resolution is not to do business with a company that is receiving a bailout. The problem is our dedication is so short-lived that we are easily side-tracked. Take, for example, my local YMCA. All of a sudden, the workout facility is full. In just a few short months, the resolutions will be broken, and once again it is proven that we talk . . . but we don't walk the walk. That is the fundamental issue with our country. -- Ron J. I am rubbing my eyes to be sure that I have not misread anything about Gov. Tim Kaine's proposals for the 2009 General Assembly session. On the one hand, he is proposing a doubling of the cigarette tax to raise revenue. On the other hand, he is proposing banning smoking in restaurants, which would lead to decreased cigarette tax revenues. Wow! I guess that is the privilege that comes with being a politician, speaking out of both sides of his mouth. -- Max Maizels, Richmond

Someone please fire Gov. Tim Kaine. Now he wants to ban smoking? Does he not know that Philip Morris is the only reason there is an old Virginia? A Virginia at all? Open R.J. Reynolds, American Tobacco . . . that will create thousands of jobs and bring open industry and profits to us. Let's ban gangs, single parenthood, importing, political raises and spending, rewards for the worthless, the lottery, illegal immigration, greed of politicians and corporate heads. For those of us who don't drink and do drugs, let's smoke to celebrate the departure of all Kaines. -- Allen Walton, Cartersville

How much more can the taxpayers stand? The government of this country takes 70 percent of real and hidden taxes from every dollar that changes hands. Figure all taxes, federal, state, city, and anything else they can tax, and see what you come up with. How much more do they want? All your money in taxes? -- Phillip Powers, Henrico

I celebrate the election and inauguration of Barack Obama as president. Not because I voted for him because I didn’t. What pleases me about this is that his election and the fact that so many whites voted for him shows that African Americans have nothing standing between them and their ambitions but themselves. For years now, there have been African Americans who have risen to heights only imagined by generations past. Oprah Winfrey, Colon Powell, Maya Angelou, Arthur Ashe, Tiger Woods, to name a few, have risen to the very top of their chosen fields. They have done so without help from government mandate or artificial advantage. Barack Obama is not president due to Affirmative Action or other any action but his own dedication, intelligence and hard work. To say that blacks in America suffer from some sort of systemic denial of equal opportunity is an illusion. Racial prejudice is, of course, a fact of life and exists among blacks as well as whites but it has no place in American society today. Our country has been ready for a black or female president for a while now and recent events have shown this to be true. Mr. Obama has risen to his position at a crucial moment in our history. Only George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and FDR have stepped into the office faced with such difficult problems. I believe that America is at a crucial point in her history and, depending on the resolution of our current issues, we will either continue as a world leader or find ourselves as a much despised second rate country. For all our sakes, I pray that President Obama turns out to be one of the greatest presidents of all time.

I’m not sure where exactly to send this message so I am going to send it all over RDT’s web site and hope it reaches Allen Walton of Cartersville’s breakfast table.
I want to start by giving you a background on myself. I am 26 years old i literally ran to the U.S.M.C. recruiting office on 9-12-01 so I could fight for my country. I pull 40+ hours working a blue collar job on the southside of Richmond. I have never asked for one penny from the U.S. government. And I am a single father who as of Sept. 2008 gained sole custody of my son from his mother and as anyone who’s been in a custody battle knows that, that is almost impossible. So to you Mr. Walton I do not appreciate the way you have completely belittled me when you optioned to make the comment “Let’s ban gangs, single parenthood…etc.“ You have the audacity to group ME a veteran of the Marine Corps, ME a blue collar worker, ME a stand up tax paying citizen, ME A PROUD SINGLE FATHER WITH THE LIKES OF GANGSTERS AND ILLEGAL IMMAGRANTS? You are vile trash Mr. Walton. Oh and one more thing repeat after me “Thank you Mr. Jones and all the other single parents out there who were/are willing to give their lives to fight to defend my First Amendment rights, so that I may SLANDER you and all that you have sacrificed with my freedom of speech”
