I have a small business in Shockoe Bottom in a little building that I hope someday will overlook right field of a new state-of-the-art ballpark. But right now, it’s around the corner from a weed-laden, macadam lot where a historic slave shack has been parked on a trailer for as long as I can remember. Down the street are boarded-up buildings, the remnants of where the Lovings used to do business, and a bunch of lots where MCV researchers and nurses battle for parking.

Play Ball on the Boulevard

There is a movement afoot in our fair city to place a $388-million office/retail/restaurant/hotel development in Shockoe Bottom. At the very center of this development is a proposed $70-million baseball complex that the master develop ers of the entire project argue will be the answer to the question of growth in Shockoe Bottom.

How come no one has thought of converting the site of UR/City Stadium into a baseball stadium? UR is moving to an on-campus facility in 2010, and City Stadium will be left vacant. Why not convert that site (or one of the parking lots surrounding it) into a baseball stadium? It’s not that far from Carytown, and all of it’s shops and restuarants. the residents have dealt with events at that site for over 80 years now. An 8000 seat baseball stadium seems like it wouldn’t be a nuisance there. It seems like a natural spot.
