13 killed in Labor Day weekend crashes in Va.
Thirteen people were killed on the state's highways during the Labor Day holiday weekend, up from seven last year, according to Virginia State Police.
During four days, state police were called to 621 crashes, the agency said in a news release.
Troopers also stopped 9,386 speeders and charged 90 people with impaired driving.
More than 2,500 drivers were given reckless-driving tickets, while 827 people were cited for seat-belt violations and 251 people were given tickets for child-restraint violations.
None of the fatalities occurred in the Richmond region.
State police have been working with other agencies on education and enforcement campaigns since the state had 1,000 fatalities in 2007.
As of yesterday, the statewide number of highway fatalities had reached 497, compared with 580 deaths at the same time last year.
