Doug Burford has always been a dreamer. The local ad man's latest flight of fancy is a plan to promote Richmond as the nation's most historic city.

He knows it's an audacious claim that is sure to be challenged by other burgs, from Boston to Philly. But that's OK; the point is to start a dialogue that "will create millions of dollars' worth of free publicity."

Hey, it's worth a shot.

Self-promotion certainly worked for Muhammed Ali, who never missed an opportunity to proclaim himself The Greatest.

Of course, it helped that Ali could back up his claim when he stepped into the ring.

And Doug is a bright enough and experienced ad man to recognize that aside from its historical attributes, he must also portray Richmond as a “fun place” to visit for people other than those with a passion for Civil War history. Millions of potential tourists pass through Richmond on I-95 and I-64 (and keep on going without stopping) en route to resort destinations. Anyone who’s ever been at the wheel of the family car for a family vacation knows that the kids are anxious to get to the beach or the theme park. Maybe we should take advantage of the closing of the state’s rest areas and simply promote the fact that we have plenty of rest rooms. Just a thought.
