2016 Olympics: Blame It on Rio
Spain's king and prime minister went to Copenhagen to press Madrid's bid to host the 2016 summer Olympics. Japan's prime minister spoke on behalf of Tokyo. Brazil's president made the case for Rio de Janeiro.
Barack Obama probably could not have won. If he had not made a personal appeal on behalf of Chicago, the peanut gallery would have blamed Chicago's failure on his absence. Because he and Michelle Obama made a pitch for the Windy City, the loss is said by some to symbolize his geopolitical impotence.
The whole thing strikes us as trivial.
Rio rates as an inevitable choice. The 2016 games will be the first Olympics held in South America. If hosting the event is a transcendental experience (we have our doubts), then the hemispheric distinction is overdue. The four finalists are magnificent cities, each and every one, yet Rio alone boasts this: "Tall and tan and young and lovely, the girl from Ipanema goes walking, and when she passes each one she passes goes 'a-a-ah!'" When our memory heard Astrid Gilberto, we knew there was no contest.
P.S.: We await the bid from local worthies to place the 2020 Olympics in Shockoe Bottom.

Someone takes offense at hearing the truth about their Rush, the spokesman for the GOP. Bit irratated at facing such.
At least some early morning news may cheer the poor fellow and other dikheads up. Nominators for the Nobel Peace Prize; former laureates, current and former members of the committee and their staff; members of national governments and legislatures; university professors of law, theology, social sciences, history and philosophy; leaders of peace research and foreign affairs institutes; and members of international courts of law have selected their 2009 awardee.
Junior Bush? Maybe some other year as he spreads his peace efforts around the world. No, not Junior. Surely, then; had to be Rush the drugman Limbaugh? Maybe some other year, this man of piece…of do-do.
Award goes to President Barack Obama. Why? “Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,“ said Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee. The Nobel committee praised Obama’s creation of “a new climate in international politics”. Former Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei, “In less than a year in office, he has transformed the way we look at ourselves and the world we live in and rekindled hope for a world at peace with itself.“
All peace-loving folks, have a happy day. Others? Well, you always have Rush who will surely congratulate and praise our President today on his radio high hour; then, you can switch to Fox-only.
A fool is a person who doesn’t know the difference between a talk show host and The President of the United States of America. Not a big deal, just a big HYPOCRITE.
You must have indulged in a little too much ‘such’ in your youth truth. All those years ago, I’m sure its slipped right thru your small, cracked mind.
Well yes. Most people already know Obama, Bush Junior, many others during younger years indulged in minor relaxation; some weed, booze, and such. No big deal.
The big deal, the big “why?“ is when ditheads avoid the obvious mile-high crazy drugness of Limbaugh, even striving to “don’t look at him, look at what a guy did 20+ years ago”. Blind fools hoodwinked by the drugman. Good little ditheads.
Truth: Read this ol man.I’m sure you already know.So does evrybody else.http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/24/world/americas/24iht-dems.3272493.html
We have a Limbo groupie, who appears to not recognize his idol’s current drug-crazed stupor. Then, perhaps he does (“Rush drug use is well known”).
I know two doctors who deal with patients with drug & alcohol rehab. They fully agree (1) a human taking as much drugs as Limbo was awhile back can not be “cured” after mere four weeks; (2) current behavior that obviously appears to be progressive by the drugman indicates he is almost cooked; ready to exploded anytime.
Wonder if a groupie has some bonding with drugman Rush beyond irrational behavior hate-filled lies?
Hey truth.Rush drug use is well known so why do you keep bringing it up.Can’t think of anything else to say?
How ‘bout your boy Obamas drug use.Tell us a little about that.
Rio, Brazil, South America; surely they were due. U.S.A. has had several Games and now has higher priorities to occupy our efforts.
Other than China, Brazil is less impacted by the world’s economic crisis; surely far less impacted than our country. Brazil has vast natural resources, runs 80% of their vehicles on ethanol from sugar cane, has abundent oil reserves to sell on the world market, just has many positives going for itself. Rio won the 2016 Games because they deserved it.
As to Obama, if had not made the effort, he would have been blamed, just as he was blamed for making the effort. All the drug-crazed rejoicing by Rush Limbaugh over “Obama’s loss” as to the Games have died down so that he can concentrate(?) his Obama attack efforts elsewhere.
It is a tempest in a teapot. The Olympics have lost their lustre. The fantasy that they are amateur games was long ago exploded. Like so much in the world, it has become a bloated, overhyped, budget-busting opportunity for political hacks all over the world to fill their pockets at the expense of their respective taxpayers. I’m sure the crushing poverty of so many in Brazil will benefit from the games….
