Minor Victory

» 3 Comments | Post a Comment

The Senate Finance Committee has delivered a small victory to the American people by defeating two Democratic proposals to create a "public option" for health insurance.

The taxpayer-subsidized, and almost certainly deficit-financed, system would have underbid private insurance companies. The Obama administration calls that "keeping them honest." When foreign competitors such as China do it, it is called "dumping."

Naturally, advocates of a single-payer system complain that the committee is merely sticking up for insurance companies. The 2.3 million Americans employed by the insurance industry are no doubt grateful it did so, as are millions of other Americans whose pension plans include insurance-company stock.

While it's on a roll, perhaps the committee will consider some better ideas -- such as letting consumers in one state buy health insurance from sellers in other states (just as they can with car and life insurance). That's the way to introduce real competition -- if Washington wants to.

If this “small victory” precluded liberal senators from amending the bill to add the “public option” on the floor of the Senate, it might mean something, but given Sen Rockafeller’s plan to do just that, it doesn’t qualify as even a “momentary advantage.“ Trying to pass this off as a “small victory” demonstrates that the RTD doesn’t understand the legislative process.
Pay attention now: the alternative media are reporting plans to sneak Obamacare into law under the cover of parliamentary tricks.

David Axelrod, speaking for the White House , said allowing interstate health insurance sales would not provide the desired effect…lower premiums;that it would take the public option to provides such relief. That’s patently false.
Makes you wonder whether the Obama administration is more interested in competition…or CONTROL.
