The Absentee Guv
According to records released by his office, Gov. Tim Kaine was out of state for all or part of 12 days in September. His peregrinations included Texas, New York, Connecticut, and Vermont -- and, of course, D.C.
A spokesman says the absenteeism is owing to "a combination of state work, work in his role as chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and personal time."
Maybe Kaine spent 98 percent of his time afield laboring on behalf of the commonwealth's citizens, and 1 percent of the time tending to DNC and personal business. Or maybe it was the other way around. His office won't say -- a point that doesn't inspire confidence.
"Thirty days hath September," begins an old mnemonic. Virginia, apparently, gets only about three-fifths of that allotment.
Reader Reactions
Guv’ner Tim’s conduct illustrates the wisdom of our Founders, who wisely saw that self-interest rather than citizen-interest would dominate any executive’s mind the longer they inhabited a mansion built by citizen labor. Good riddance, I say!
