Weekly Review
WEEK'S END
No one seems to have followed our advice. Although we warned that the temptation is to read too much into elections rather than too little, national experts of all inclinations have discerned transcendental meaning in Virginia's 2009 results. Although the outcome represented a major triumph for Bob McDonnell and the GOP, low-turnout elections tend not to be watersheds. Although the turnout -- the worst in a gubernatorial election since the rise of two-party politics in Virginia -- may have serious implications for future races, it seems unlikely to indicate partisan or ideological realignment.Virginia remains a purple state in a nation as evenly divided as it was during the late 1800s.
Are others as surprised as we that the so-called youth vote which supposedly had such a profound effect last year failed to sustain its momentum?
Virginia Tech's football team played games on consecutive Thursday nights. We confidently assert that midweek games do not interfere with academic workloads of the scholar-athletes.
One of the more welcome developments of recent weeks did not receive extra-extra-read-all-about-it attention. The Virginia Supreme Court's unanimous decision to uphold the State Corporation Commission's approval of Dominion Virginia Power's proposed 65-mile power line in Northern Virginia is good news. The line is essential to supplying the energy needs of Dominion's service area -- a region crucial to national interests.
The Holiday Shoppers Fair at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden, which began yesterday and continues today, offers items from 15 museum stores. Museum shops have earned a reputation for selling top-quality products that delight, educate, and entertain. The profits from museum sales also benefit worthy institutions. The Ginter event is an opportunity to select gifts from a variety of sources. If you cannot make it to the garden today, then be sure to visit the shops at the region's many museums and historic sites.
