Who We Are

On Dec. 26, 1941, Winston Churchill addressed a joint session of Congress. Only a few weeks before, Japan had struck Pearl Harbor. Churchill came to the United States to discuss war-planning with Franklin Roosevelt.

In his congressional speech, the British prime minister gave an honest appraisal of the military outlook. He depicted the challenges and described the necessary sacrifices but expressed his confidence in the Allied cause.

After examining Japan's deceits and depravities, he asked, "What kind of a people do they think we are?"

. . .

Last week Scotland released a Libyan intelligence agent convicted in the bombing of Pan Am flight 103. The Lockerbie incident claimed more than 250 lives. Abdel Baset al-Megrahi returned to a hero's reception orchestrated by Moammar Gadhafi.

"What kind of a people do they think we are?"

When Gadhafi gave his answer, Scotland (and the UK) failed to prove him wrong.

How does the U.S. response measure up to the question posed? Any ambassadors been recalled? Any ambassadors been given the boot? Any U.S. funding flowing to the U.K., Scotland or Libya being interrupted? Posturing - that’s all we get—and assurance that we are making our feelings known in some nebulous, secret way. By the way, Gadhafi is coming to give a big speech to the U.N. soon and staying at some Libyan-owned place in New Jersey. I suggest we let him find his way to this country and to his place in N.J. without any federal or state protection. Let him feel as exposed as thosed poor souls who were on that plane over Lockerbie.

The latest statement that passes for “statesmanship” from the UK is Scotland’s justice minister decrying that Lybia “broke their promise.“ PULEEZE! Robert the Bruce must be turning over in his grave.
