Political Hacks

» 1 Comment | Post a Comment

Henrico supervisors have voted unanimously to raise the fares for taxis operating in the county, starting Jan. 1. (Implementation requires similar votes in Richmond and Chesterfield.) This leads to an overwhelming question: Why in the world are political leaders setting prices for services in a competitive marketplace?

Between 160 and 170 taxis operate in Henrico. There is absolutely no reason for government officials to micromanage the pricing negotiations between those suppliers and the customers who want a ride -- just as there is no good reason for officials to set prices for haircuts, lawn-mowing, restaurant meals, or any other goods or services. Hack rates should be set by supply and demand, not politicians.

Of course, the supervisors were merely following the recommendations of the Capital Region Taxicab Advisory Board.

Why not get rid of that, too?

Hack rates should be set by the hack, and by no one else. Currently, all taxi companies have to charge the exact same fares, by law—no price competition allowed! I agree 100,000% with this editorial.
