‘Rose Up’

» 3 Comments | Post a Comment

During his trial for the death of Tahliek Taliaferro, Ethan Parrish testified that when he fired his semiautomatic weapon, the rifle "rose up on me. I lost control of it."

Although we generally share the sentiments of the slogan, "Guns don't kill people, people do," we will remember Parrish's assertion --and its implications -- the next time we hear the pro-gun cliché.

An AK47 weighs about 9.5 lbs empty, add a loaded 75 round drum and the weight comes to approximately 13.6 lbs.  The “civilain” AK47 is a “semi” automatic which means that you have to fully pull and release the trigger each time a round is fired. Parrish’s statement that the rifle “rose up on me” might be good line if he was firing a true AK47 fired on full auto but he had to conciously pull and release the trigger each time the “semi” automatic rifle was fired - plus the weight of 13.6 lb gun/magazine combination would resist the “rise”.  “Youtube” has a video clip of a very small woman and 9 yr old boy firing am AK with a standard magazine and they “controlled it”.  Maybe the jury, and the editor, should have gone to a local gun range with someone that has an AK47 to see how easy it is to control before having passed judgement.

I’m not sure what your point is here.  If you are saying “naughty gun” then you should be ashamed of yourself and stick your pen in your rotten eye.  Did I get close?

How dare you try to implicate that it was only the gun that killed that young man in Powhatan.  He was killed by the criminal that had the weapon in his hand.  He had NO idea how the weapon would act when he pulled the trigger and tried to use that fact to place the blame on an inanimate object.  Do you blame the automobile for all the people killed on the road. No.  Do you blame the house for all those killed in house fires. No then how dare you impugne those of us who advocate that the crimminals that use an inanimate object the wrong go to jail and not restrict the use of a legally obtained product.  You are showing your liberal ;leanings and I hope most gun owners/user will write in as I have.  The gun did not kill Taliafaro, Ethan Parich did and no lawyer trick will change that fact.
