In Brief:Economic turmoil puts extra demand on food banks and similar insitutions. More families turn to such agencies for nourishment of body and spirit; as their portfolios shrink, donors may fear they cannot give as much as they would like. Yesterday the Dominion Foundation -- which is affiliated with Dominion, parent of the local power company -- announced a $1.1 million gift to food banks in the states where it has operations. More than half the sum will go to food banks in Virginia and North Carolina. The dollars translate into meals distributed by the doers of good. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus -- and a star.
