As Judeo-Christians, We Must Care for Sick
Editor, Times-Dispatch: I attended the Public Square discussion on health care and found it educational in many ways, but unsatisfying in others. It is true that there was no shouting, and we did get a bit of additional information about the health care issues. However, I was disappointed that I was not able to ask my question -- and that there was no conversation about the moral and ethical aspects of our health care system.
It is a central tenet of the Judeo-Christian religious tradition that we are called to care for the sick, the poor, the hungry, and even strangers -- and that we will be judged by our treatment of the least of these. I wanted to ask Rep. Eric Cantor how he thinks we will be judged by history when we, the richest nation in the world, leave hundreds of thousands of our fellow citizens to be devastated financially for lack of insurance, or even to die for lack of good health care.
Although Cantor appeared very conciliatory and constructive in the forum, his demeanor was belied by the mailing I received from him that very day, in which he urged people "to stop Obama . . . " and repeated in the starkest terms every myth and fear tactic to undermine health reform. It is clear that Cantor is more concerned about protecting the health insurance industry than the health of ordinary Americans, his constituents.
I am thankful to The Times-Dispatch for giving me the opportunity to actually see my representative, Eric Cantor, in person. And I applaud you for finding a formula for getting civility from all participants. Now, if you can only find a way to get honesty from our politicians. Your forum made progress with the problem of courtesy, but, alas, not hypocrisy. In any case, thank you for hosting the event. It was a wonderful change from the town hall sideshows.

Thanks to Carol Maxwell for her excellent comments. It seems that many people are proud of their Judeo-Christian heritage only when it suits them and doesn’t cost them anything. These folks have no problem invoking the United States’ status as a “Christian nation” or a country founded upon Judeo-Christian beliefs as justification for the government to intervene in matters such as gay rights and abortion. However, whenever money is involved, they flock to the altar of unregulated capitalism and conveniently forget that the true heart of the Judeo-Christian tradition is living in community and looking out for the those who are less fortunate. Both the Old and New Testaments are overflowing with warnings against greed and selfishness and instructions to take care of the sick and needy. If this is truly a Judeo-Christian nation, then why is it wrong for the government to promote this pillar of the Judeo-Christian tradition?
Ms Maxwell may not understand we are the most caring nation in the world when it comes to the sick, the poor the hungry and strangers.
Individual Americans are constantly reaching into their own pockets (spare a Joe Biden) to help our a neighbor.
Churches and social groups are constantly holding fund raisers and volunteering their own time for these noble causes.
We do this voluntarily on our own. Mostly with little to no coaxing.
Individuals already care because we feel compelled to. It is not the job of the government to do so.
Now, if you can only find a way to get honesty from our politicians.
Impossible. The number of our representatives that maintain principles and honesty in DC can be counted on one hand.
The only solution in the long run is to stop voting, thus ending their legitimacy.
Ms. Maxwell, the honesty and hypocrisy of politicians IS the issue. We are being led to believe that people such as those ‘leading’ this country can deliver the kind of care we all want for everyone. That is not a partisan remark. We are being poorly served by both parties who, as usual, use health care as a political football while aggrandizing special interests without solving the problem. Perhaps all would do well to turn to the OLD Testament and learn what happens to nations led in the way ours is being led.
