Correspondent of the Day: Obama’s School Speech Benefited Children
Obama's School Speech Benefited Children
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
The audacity of it all!
The president of the United States of America gave a short speech to school children challenging them to "work hard, set educational goals, and take responsibility for their learning," yet few local school districts showed the address during the school day. Wow.
Whatever could the president be thinking? Perhaps he thinks it's important to not only supplement the message many children hear daily from their parents, but also to give that message to many other children who never hear those encouraging words. There are children in our area who would benefit from hearing the first African-American president tell them that if they work hard they can achieve their dreams. Truly audacious!
If this situation involved a president with the last name of Bush or Reagan, would we really be having this conversation?

Actually Jan, we did have “this” conversation. Democrats denounced George H. W. Bush for giving a similar speech, demanded an investigation from the GAO for his use of Education Dept. funds (just as did Obama)and called members of Bush’s administration in front of them for extensive hearings.
Both parties play partisan politics. Why does it only bother you when the elbow-throwing comes from the right?
“I want a American President, thank you…“
Oh brother. He is an American. Here is a clue: Hawaii is a part of the United States, sport. Oh by the way, he is black too. Deal with it.
What’s with this first African-American President..I want a American President, thank you…
