CORRESPONDENT OF THE DAY
Many Things Are Better Than New Stadium
Editor, Times-Dispatch:
Are we still having discussion about a ballpark in Shockoe Bottom? I guess so -- as evidenced by Del. Manoli Loupassi's recent bill proposing that state sales tax be diverted for this purpose. Please excuse me, but I thought we were in a recession -- and can't we find a better way to spend money? Dave Roberson, in a recent letter, "Forget the Stadium, Build a Multi-Use Arena," proposed suggestions for alternatives to a ballpark. We have a few more. With the help of another Church Hill resident, we suggest:
--Dig a hole and allow the area to flood, as it probably will again someday, and just make it a lake. That way the city can charge for rowboats and other aquatic conveyances. Have bass fishing tournaments in the lake rather than the river.
--Spruce up the Farmer's Market by attracting artisans. Maybe even an art show from time to time.
--Take some space and plant a neighborhood garden.
--Close off Main Street occasionally for several blocks and have a block party.
--Have a horse show, a dog show, a cat show, or a miniature train show -- any kind of show. Make parking more available.
But please, no ballpark. For goodness' sake, we already have one -- fix it up.

How in the world was this chosen for COD? Is this a joke or just some lame and limp attempt at sarcasm? I know Church Hill has quite the elevated position overlooking the city but it almost seems that there must be a significant degree of thin air up that way that the author(s) have had go straight to their respective heads.
My question.
Unless someone is in the “know”, we don’t HAVE a baseball team, How about we get THAT before we build the stadium!?
City Council needs to stop putting the cart before the horse. IE: 6th ST Marketplace, Canal Walk, etc. etc.
