A man was killed yesterday in a single-vehicle wreck in Henry County.

Shedrick Damaine Barner, 21, of Bassett was driving south on U.S. 220, five-tenths of a mile north of state Route 689, when the car ran off the road to the right and struck an embankment and some trees at 5:21 a.m., police said.

Barner, who was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene, police said.

Virginia State Police also reported that a 79-year-old woman was killed Friday in a crash in Accomack County.

Eleanor P. Severs of Dagsboro, Del., was a passenger in a car traveling north on U.S. 13, one-tenth of a mile south of state Route 639, when it ran off the road, struck an embankment and overturned about 2 p.m., police said.

Severs, who police said was wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

Their deaths brought the 2009 state highway death toll to 95, compared with 131 at the same date last year.
