Two killed in crashes in Virginia

A 22-year-old man was killed in a three-vehicle crash in Bedford County on Wednesday, Virginia State Police said.

Cody Allen Campbell of Goode was a passenger in a car that had stopped on U.S. 221 to make a left turn onto state Route 668 when a sport utility vehicle struck it from behind and caused it to go into the opposite lane of traffic, where it struck a bucket truck at 3:13 p.m., police said. The bucket truck overturned and the car went up a small embankment.

Campbell, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, died at Lynchburg General Hospital less than an hour later.

State police also reported that a West Virginia man died in a single-vehicle wreck in Clarke County on Wednesday.

Robert Archie Summers, 50, of Hedgesville, W.Va., was driving west on U.S. 50, fourtenths of a mile west of state Route 600, when the van ran off the road to the right, struck a tree and overturned at 3:27 p.m.

Summers was not wearing a seat belt, police said, and died at the scene.

Their deaths brought the number of people killed this year on Virginia roads to 118, compared with 177 as of the same date last year.
