4 Virginians among 5 killed on state roads

At least five people were killed on Virginia roads Friday and yesterday, state police said.

An 87-year-old man was involved in a two-car crash in Bedford on Friday morning.

Sidney Jerome Rosenbaum of Bedford was driving a car north on U.S. 221 when it ran off the right shoulder and Rosenbaum lost control. The car came back onto the road, crossed the center line and hit a second car head-on at 9:24 a.m.

Rosenbaum, who was wearing a seat belt, died at Lynchburg General Hospital in Lynchburg, police said.

A Delaware man was killed in a two-car crash Friday afternoon in Shenandoah County.

Mark J. Kamalski, 46, of Middletown, Del., was driving south on Interstate 81, one-tenth of a mile south of state Route 211, when his pickup truck was sideswiped by a car. The truck went off the left side of the road, flipped several times and landed in the median on its roof at 2:45 p.m. Police said Kamalski was wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.

A single-vehicle crash in Lunenburg County on Friday killed a 20-year-old man.

James Bradley Wilmouth of Drakes Branch was driving a pickup truck west on state Route 623, three-tenths of a mile west of state Route 688, when it ran off the right side of the road at 4:04 p.m.

Wilmouth, who police said was not wearing a seat belt, died at the scene.

Early yesterday, a woman was killed when her car hit a tree in Henry County.

Vatera Latrice Gravely, 21, of Axton was driving on state Route 650, 2 miles south of state Route 1337, when the car ran off the left shoulder and struck a tree at 1:18 a.m.

Gravely was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, police said.

A Springfield woman was fatally injured in a two-car crash in Fairfax County yesterday.

Christina L. Palese, 28, was headed west on Interstate 495, one-quarter mile east of Van Dorn Street, when the car was struck head-on by a car traveling east in the westbound lane at 3:32 a.m.

Palese, who was wearing a seat belt, died at Alexandria Hospital in Alexandria, police said.

Their deaths brought the number of people killed this year on Virginia roads to 123, compared with 180 as of the same date last year.
