Six killed in Va. crashes

State police reported the deaths of six people after four vehicle crashes on state roads Friday. That brought the 2009 Virginia highway death toll to 333, compared with 400 at the same time last year.
- Haven L. Dobbins, 62, of Narrows died at 3:47 p.m., about 15 minutes after he crashed his motorcycle on Interstate 77, just north of Interstate 81 in Wytheville. The motorcycle ran off the road and struck a culvert.
- Tamera M. McGrath, 37, of Mineral died at 7:10 p.m., about 20 minutes after a crash on state Route 618, just west of state Route 700 in Louisa County. McGrath's car ran off the road twice and struck a tree. Police said she was not wearing a seat belt.
- Gail E. Sikkema, 74, and Sydney A. Hagen, 49, both of Kalamazoo, Mich., died from injuries when their car ran off the road and struck a tree on U.S. 1, just north of Lay Hill Lane in Stafford County. Sikkema, the driver, died at the scene at 3:23 p.m. Hagen died at 7:27 p.m. at a Washington hospital. They were not wearing seat belts, according to police.
Miguel Ortiz, 21, of Virginia Beach and Eric C. Hallstrom, 29, of Chesapeake were involved in a crash at 6:45 p.m. on Interstate 264, just west of Birdneck Road, in Virginia Beach. The vehicle they were riding in switched lanes, ran off the road, struck several trees and ejected both occupants. Ortiz, the driver, died at 7:07 p.m. and Hallstrom at 7:52 p.m. at the scene.
