D-Day Memorial to remain open this winter despite financial woes

LYNCHBURG -- The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford will remain open for the winter despite its financial struggles, said William McIntosh, president of the memorial foundation.

The memorial would operate from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. throughout the winter season except during bad weather and Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. It will close at 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

The foundation had considered operating by appointment during winter when visitation is expected to be lower. It recently decided to cut 11 of its 24 staff members because of its financial problems.

President Barack Obama signed legislation last month authorizing an extensive study of the National Park Service assuming management of the memorial.

"I think this place sells itself from there so we're going to stay on it and do everything we can to try to get this place the recognition and stability it deserves," said Rep. Tom Perriello, D-5th, while attending a Veterans Day ceremony at the memorial Wednesday.
