6 more Va. DMV offices eliminating Saturday hours
Six more Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles offices are eliminating their Saturday hours.
Effective Sept. 19, the new DMV offices that will no longer be open on Saturdays are in Altavista, Covington, Emporia, Lexington, Staunton and Vansant. These offices will remain operational Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Twelve of DMV's 74 offices already operate on weekdays only.
"This change is part of DMV's goal to provide excellent customer service while keeping a check on spending during these tough economic times," said DMV Commissioner D.B. Smit.

Listen Kaine has never, ever worked a day in his life..he is into community organizing like Obama. Name one job in the private sector that Kaine has had for more than 18 months. And don’t count his lawyer wife.
Good suggestions by others could be combined for the better of all:
1) DMV closed on Mon and open on Sat
2) DMV closed on Saturday. Mon, Wed & Fri open regular hours - Tues & Thurs open 12:00 pm - 8:00 pm (libraries have similar schedules)
Either option allows working people time to go to DMV without losing time from work and/or money from paycheck.
Some good, creative ideas in this thread. Close the DMV on Mon or Tues so they can stay open Saturday for working people. Revise their hours to 10-7 or even 11-8 so working people can get there at the end of the day.
I agree that this move is characteristically punitive on the part of the state bureaucracy. They forget that working taxpayers actually pay their salaries.
This is a fraud by cockeyed liberal governor. DMV is a self supporting operation. Their expenses are paid for by the people who use their services. In fact, they have routinely made money for the commonwealth.
So why is Kaine cutting their hours and making more and more people wait in line?
It is because he wants to make us feel the pain he is feeling in not having enough money to spend.
Warner did that when he was governor. We went into a recession and Warner was desperate but the average Virginian was not stunned by the fact that Warner did not have the money he wanted to spend.
So he made us feel his pain by cutting out very busy and profitable DMV offices and he cut the hours at the ABC stores even though they make a profit too.
Kaine like Warner just wants us to feel their pain and let them raise taxes…again.
Timmy go home to Linwood he will feel your pain.
Another punitive tactic; effectively, extortion by withholding services or making access to them very inconvenient. In so doing, Kaine follows the “Mark Warner model” of governance. Prudent negotiation and effective management of the Northrop-Grumman contract, limiting security services provided for the Presidential inaugural to those that could be reimbursed under federal rules, and readjustment of the hours of services in DMV offices based on studies of demand patterns, could all have made preserved scarce revenue so that these closings and other many other service limitations would not have been necessary.
::sigh:: Yet another inconvience to the residents of this state. As if the DMV isn’t already terrible. LONG lines and terrible service. Have you ever seen how SLOW the employees move? They are there for their 8hrs…they don’t care if you have to wait 3hrs to get your license. Now it will be even worse.
Just another example of democrats unable to effectively govern. Warner closed the DMV offices and Kaine is proving he is even more inept than Warner. Perhaps it would help if he had taken his position seriously instead of a part time job.
We just got back from a trip to Cincinnati. Went through West Virginia, Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio. In each state except Virginia the grass was neatly mowed and the rest areas were open and inviting. Virginia’s grass was unmowed and rest areas closed. Frankly it was embarrassing to see my state in such conditions. All states have the same budget woes caused by the economy yet they apparently are better managed and still serving citizens needs.
Dog,
Except the ABC Stores generate revenue for Virginia’s schools. The more hours, the more revenue. Not a good comparison.
Otherwise your time-shifting idea has merit.
How about shutting down DMV on say, Monday, instead of Saturday - which would make it more convenient for those of us who work during the week?
Jim, BTW, McDonnell wants tolls on some interstate highways. Isn’t that a tax increase? Especially for folks who live in Va right on the State lines.
