Fort A.P. Hill, Fort Pickett and the Defense Supply Center Richmond are the first winners of the new Virginia Department of Defense Eagle Awards.

Gov. Timothy M. Kaine announced the winners yesterday.

Among other things, Fort A.P. Hill was cited for establishing stream buffers, using innovative stormwater management techniques and protecting more than 2,900 acres through conservation easements, according to state officials.

Fort Pickett established an environmental management zone along the Nottoway River, captured rainwater for reuse and protected more than 2,500 acres.

Defense Supply Center Richmond was chosen for using low-impact stormwater management techniques, limiting air emissions and reducing the production of hazardous waste.

The awards are part of a partnership between the state and the U.S. Department of Defense.

"These award-winning military installations have shown remarkable stewardship of the natural resources entrusted to their care," Kaine said.
