PORTRAIT OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS: Read the report by the Pew Hispanic Center

Virginia's illegal immigrant population doubled since 2000 to an estimated 300,000 in 2008, according to a new study released today by the Pew Hispanic Center. The study also says the rapid growth of illegal immigrants has slowed.

The center estimates that the state's labor force includes about 210,000 illegal immigrants, or about 5.1 percent of workers. About 4 percent of the state's total population of 7.7 million is made up of illegal immigrants, according to the Pew Hispanic Center, a nonpartisan research group that reports on Latinos' growing impact on the nation.

The Virginia numbers mirror the national trend, with illegal immigrants making up 4 percent of the nation's population and 5.4 percent of the labor force. The Pew Hispanic Center survey

The Pew Hispanic Center's survey is based on data in the Census Bureau's March 2008 population figures and describes characteristics of the illegal immigrant population. Among the center's findings:

  • Children of illegal immigrants make up about 6.8 percent of the nation's elementary and secondary school population.

  • Illegal immigrants are more likely than U.S.-born citizens to live in a household with a spouse and children

  • About 76 percent of the illegal immigrant population is Hispanic.

  • About 73 percent of the children of illegal immigrants were born in this country and are U.S. citizens.

  • More than half of adult illegal immigrants (59 percent) had no health insurance in 2007.

The 2007 median income for illegal immigrants was about $36,000; the median household income for U.S. citizens was $51,000.

for (MeToo)You seem to be stumbling over yourself trying to explain your comments that seems to be “only in your brain”. Yeah- the first thing I do when I go out in my car is remember to “forget my driver’s license”- but I ACTUALLY HAVE A LEGAL ONE! If a policeman stops me and I am in the mood for trying to get over on him- I tell him “no habla ingles”- OOPS!-since I am not Spanish- guess that would not work.

they make it seem as though they make less than a u.s. born person… what they don’t tell you in the story is that even legal immigrants aren’t required to pay taxes for some time after their immigration… what that evens out to…? is them making more than someone born and raised in the USA. *shakes head* the world today just disgusts me..

It’s just going to get worse unless our government gets serious about this. As a construction worker I have seen wages stagnate and fewer americans seeking blue collar work.So businesses use more illegals which stagnates wages more so fewer americans seek blue collar work…My former employer tried to stay legal and to call INS to check IDs. They would pass but the man had already worked for us under different name, green card and and ID. It happened all the time. My employer would shrug, they passed we can’t do anything but we’re covered. Until we have and require secure IDs and prosecute employers this will not stop, it’ll get worse. With no IDs and no employers willing to hire them illegal aliens will stop coming and leave on their own.Unless Mexico collapes then all bets are off.

Wow, ya’ll have a hard time sensing sarchasm.  Obviously I was not serious about the family values thing.  It is an interesting statistic though.  Ramgrl- not that I’m saying I’m doubting you, but please provide the source from which you get your information- might help the argument to know it’s coming from something legit and not your own brain.

Jack- I guess my point was that having an ID doesn’t make you legal or illegal.  There are plenty of legal adult Americans who do not have or bother to carry any form of identification.  There are also plenty of legal immigrants who do not speak English.  So in short, you can’t assume that because someone doesn’t have an ID to show you (maybe they just forgot it) or speak English does not make them illegal.

{“Illegal immigrants are more likely than U.S.-born citizens to live in a household with a spouse and children”

Isn’t that a refreshing statistic.  Who has better family values now???}

I’m guessing that you have NO clue what the rate of domestic violence is among these groups either. The fastest rising domestic violence rates are among illegal immigrants, mainly Latinos cause where else are they going to go??? These “families” stay together because it’s not like a woman who is an illegal immigrant can run to the cops if she gets beat up. Not like she can just leave and find a new place since most men in the family work and women take care of the family. The latino crime rate is thru the roof. Growing faster than ANY other race and leaving the most unsolved murders because they flee back to their country of origin after committing the crime. Look at the FBI’s most wanted list and tell me there isn’t a problem with illegal immigrants.

Personally I am sick and tired of pressing 1 if I want to hear something in English. Especially when I am calling ANY state department. Learn the lanugage. Its not like they dont hand out ESL classes like candy. And if you want to stay here, get permission. Otherwise you’re no more than any other criminal and anyone who believes different is a little too dense to realize that public schools are already struggling and it is NOT the job of the American tax payer to foot the bill for the children of these criminals.

BTW- not having an ID or speaking English does not make you illegal.  Good to know you judge people based on surface appearances and a piece of plastic though.

I bet you have an ID. If you have a drivers license you have an ID. There is no reason these people can’t be required to provide proof they are in fact here legally. There is also no reason for us not to deport them if here illegally. It amazes me the number of people now who don’t seem to believe in obeying the laws of our country or turn a blind eye to others breaking the law.

Next time a cop stops you tell him/her you don’t have an ID and can’t speak English.

Companies are a big part of the problem. The illegals can get jobs and just “fake” the ID. The illegals know which companies will not check- and the companies know they are illegal. It takes a lot of money to do a check from another country- they do not bother. When the illegals get into the company- they do as they please. They are arrogant, demanding and work when and if they want- don’t have any arguments with them- you are “offending” them. They ‘do not understand English”- at their own convenience. Companies do not want you to show “prejudice against them” so- the illegals will teach you Spanish- they do not like the United States- they will tell you that- so- who belongs here more?- oh- but don’t shorten the paycheck- they understand that! We have to accomodate them to the point of ridiculous- go to their country and you better learn Spanish- don’t think you will get the “roll out the carpet treatment”. Fine the ones who hire them- that might help! I do not see that they get any less pay- sometimes it is more.

Illegal immigration is not a Warner or Kaine problem, it’s a border control problem.  Blame Texas.

Here’s a way we regular citizens can help stop illegals. When someone comes to repair your home/lawn, ask for ID. If they speak no English and have no ID tell them you will not allow them on your premises.
