WICOMICO CHURCH -- A 6-year-old boy allegedly was so upset at missing the school bus that he took the family's car and tried to drive to class before crashing the vehicle.

The boy was checked out at Rappahannock General Hospital after yesterday morning's crash, released and driven to his classes at Northumberland Elementary School, Virginia State Police Trooper J.L. Lewis said.

Lewis said the youth, a resident of Wicomico Church, felt so bad about missing the school bus yesterday morning that he took the keys to the family's 2005 Ford Taurus while his mother was sleeping and drove toward school.

The boy was westbound on U.S. 360 at 7:40 a.m. when he lost control of the Taurus, ran off the right side of the road, then the left side, then the right again before striking an embankment and a utility pole, the trooper said.

The child was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, which occurred just east of state Route 636.

Authorities were withholding the name of the child, who was not seriously injured, the trooper said.

An investigation of the incident is continuing.

That is absolutely ridiculous.  I can’t believe a 6 year old did that.  My 5 year old drives himself to kindergarten almost every day and has only had a few fender benders, mainly because the Cadillac is so big.  They need to move high school driving up to the elementary level to avoid this happening more often!  Safety first people!

Hold on good people, lets not be too quick in our judgement. We do not know the conditions of that childs mother. There very well may be a cause that we can understand.Key word, investigation, and while that is pending lets give thanks to GOD that the
child is safe.

I guess it could be looked at as a mother not doing her job, but a 6 year old knowing how to get himself ready for school, realizing he missed the bus, and knowing how to get to school, seems like a pretty smart kid. Someone tought him well. [note, car key within reach of a child is never a good idea, and I suspect that will not happen again]

Why was the mother still asleep? Her lazy butt should have been up and making sure he was getting off to school. She needs to be investigated!

Poor child. His mother was sleeping and not supervising his actions? No wonder so many of our children have problems when it’s too much trouble for their parents to be parents.
