Vermont judge grants nonbiological mother custody

RUTLAND, Vt. -- A Vermont judge has granted sole custody of a girl to her nonbiological mother in a custody dispute involving a former lesbian couple.

Family Court Judge William Cohen awarded custody of the 7-year-old to Janet Jenkins of Fair Haven on Friday after finding the biological mother, Lisa Miller, in contempt of court earlier this year for denying Jenkins access to the girl.

Miller, who lives in Virginia and renounced homosexuality after the couple broke up in 2003, plans to appeal.

The Rutland Herald says Cohen said the only way to ensure equal access to the child was by switching custody. He also said the benefits to the child of having access to both parents would be worth the difficulties of the change.

Please say this is a mistake. If it is not, why? Surely there is not a law that can remove a child from it’s mother for contempt of court.

If our judicial system has regressed to this or has this kind of power, it’s no longer government by the people or for the people. Don’t start that liberal, conservative crap. I am a Disabled Veteran and I’m talking AMERICAN (all the people)

This is just plain ridiculous for a ‘judge’ to give custody of this seven-year old girl to her mother’s former sex partner.  Ms Jenkins is in no way related to the girl and has no right to get custody.  This poor little girl has suffered enough just being illegitimate.  I fMs Jenkins really wants a child (this is probably all political) there are plenty of ‘men’ out there that would be glad to help her out.
