Va. marks Telework Day

The start of the work week could begin at home for many Virginians.

Today is Telework Day, and Virginia businesses are being encouraged to let their employees work at home.

Karen Jackson, the state's deputy secretary of technology, said there are environmental as well as psychological benefits to working at home. Workers save on gas, the environment is spared auto emissions from fewer commuters and drivers avoid the frustration of sitting in traffic.

Studies also show working outside the office can increase productivity.

Jackson said nearly one-fourth of state workers who are eligible to work at home do so at last one day a week. She had no figures on telecommuting in the private sector.

All good points. However, some jobs can’t be performed from home and it can create a sense of inequity if not handled properly. So managers have to do a good job of communicating why some jobs qualify and some don’t.

Area Man you are so correct.  The City City has a policy, but leaves it up to each individual director.  Some let people work from home, but many others do not.  This makes no sense.

Most white collar jobs can be done from home full time.  Reduced traffic, fuel consumption and pollution, a more relaxed and less distracting work environment, no lost commute time, cheaper meals, office space savings to the state and therefore to YOU the taxpayer; the list goes on.

A big problem is the old manager mindset wherein they believe they need to ‘see’ people to believe they are working.  These people either need to get with the program or GO.

Kaine should create a program where managers are rewarded for encouraging their employees to work from home, and severely penalized if not.
