Virginia Railway Express is raising fares to help offset a projected $1 million budget gap.

VRE officials say that beginning today, fares will increase by 6 percent. It will be the second time this year that the commuter line has raised prices.

The changes mean that the cost of a trip from Fredericksburg to Union Station will go from $9.75 to $10.30. A monthly pass will now cost $285, a $15 increase.

For those traveling on the Manassas Line, a single fare from Manassas or Manassas Park to Union Station will be $8.45, which is 45 cents higher. Monthly passes will increase from $221 to $234.

Yup, that mass transit’s sure paying its own way. Growth goes further to paying its own way than mass transit.
