Alexandria police chief charged with DUI
Published: July 27, 2009
ALEXANDRIA — Alexandria’s police chief is facing drunken driving charges.
City officials say David Baker was arrested after he was involved in a car crash late Saturday in an unmarked city vehicle. His blood-alcohol level was 0.19, more than twice the legal threshold for drunken driving.
Baker has been placed on administrative leave. Deputy Police Chief Earl Cook will serve as acting chief.
City Manager James Hartmann describes the arrest of Baker as “very disappointing.“ Hartmann has the authority to fire Baker right away but says he will wait for the findings of an internal review before making a decision.
The 58-year-old Baker has been with the Alexandria department for 19 years and was a D.C. police officer for 21 years before that.

Don’t you just love this story? If the public only knew how many cops get away with the same things they arrest people for. Quite a few cops I’ve known routinely get behind the wheel and drive after consuming alcohol.
