Longtime librarian honored for service
When Fran Freimarck became director of the Pamunkey Regional Library in 1977, there was one main library and two storefront locations in Hanover County, and one location each in Goochland and King William counties.
Today, there are 10 branches in all -- including six in Hanover. The library's service area also now extends into King and Queen County.
Freimarck is the recent recipient of the George Mason Award from the Virginia Library Association. It's given to individuals or organizations that contribute to the growth and development of library and information services in local communities, the state or the nation.
In addition to the new locations, technology and professional reference librarians have been added under Friemarck's watch. She has served on a committee that helped establish standards for libraries throughout Virginia, and she was secretary of the library association in 1981 and 1982, and its president in 1990.
"I really am grateful," Freimarck said Friday, adding that the library association "really has been a big part of my professional life."
The association, she said, has been a way for her to meet colleagues and learn best practices from libraries across Virginia and the nation.
