FARMVILLE— Police in Castro Valley, Calif., this morning raided the home of a man held in connection with the slayings of four people whose bodies were found in a house here.

Lt. Dave Alvey of the Alameda County Sheriff’s office said the raid was conducted about 1 a.m. California time.

There was no immediate information on what items may have been seized.

In Farmville today, General District Judge Robert G. Woodson Jr. appointed prominent defense attorney Cary Bowen of Richmond to represent Richard Samuel Alden McCroskey III.

A court appearance was set for Jan. 11 at 10 a.m. unless there is a bond hearing before then.

McCroskey appeared for the hearing by a videocast from the Piedmont Regional Jail, where he is being held after his arrest Saturday.

McCroskey was captured at Richmond International Airport following the discovery Friday of four bodies at the Farmville home of a Longwood University professor. Police confirmed the death of Mark Niederbrock, a pastor who was separated from the associate professor, Debra S. Kelley. In addition to Kelley, friends and associates have identified the others killed as their daughter, Emma Niederbrock, and Melanie Wells, a friend of Emma’s visiting from West Virginia.

A court document said McCroskey did not have a criminal record. So far he has been charged only with the killing of Niederbrock, but official identifications of the others have not been released.

On Saturday, police said McCroskey stole Niederbrock’s 2000 Honda and wrecked it before being spotted at a Farmville Sheetz store about 7 a.m. Friday.

Additional details today gave a fuller account of that element of the case.

Prince Edward Sheriff’s Sgt. Stuart Raybold said that shortly after 4 a.m. Friday the sheriff’s office received a call from the 1400 block of Poor House Road to report a suspicious vehicle.

When a deputy arrived, he found that McCroskey had pulled into a driveway, aparently to turn around, backed up across the road and got the vehicle stuck on the other edge of the pavement, Raybold said. The deputy issued him a summons for driving without a license. The vehicle was damaged and had to be towed; the tow truck driver dropped him off at the Sheetz.

Raybold said there was no reason for the deputy to be suspicious. In a college town, he said, it’s not unusual for someone to be driving another person’s car.

“He told deputies he was going back to California in the very near future,“ Raybold said.

The bodies were discovered by police Friday afternoon. McCroskey was seen at the Richmond airport that day but it was unclear what he did between that time and his capture Saturday.

My poor 80 year old mother grew up across the street from that house. She is shattered that something like that could happen in farmville.

To Anoynomous who said Sam did this due to stress—

Are you out of your mind? Stress??? Everyone I know is dealing with some form of stress, they don’t go killing four innocent people!! Dr. Kelley was my professor for four years and she in NO WAY deserved this.  She taught us about sickos like Sam and then she had him come into her home and take her families life.  I hope parents see this as a sign to be more strict on their children and what they listen to/do online.  God bless the family and friends who are suffering from this tragedy.

And btw, if he just snapped and had any human emotions whatsoever, he would NOT have stayed in the home for days with decomposing bodies long enough to kill the father who didn’t come to the house and die until thursday.  SICKO SAM is right.

Apparently, They met at a concert months ago. And continued to talk online.

He is not a bad person, He was under a LOT of stress due to his parents divorcing, Emma breaking up with him probably caused him to snap under all of the stress.

Tragic indeed. Wonder if his psychiatric history will show up in some counselor’s home?
Memo to Professional Death Penalty Protesters - as an alternative to this man getting what he deserves, how about one of you volunteering to keep him in your home?

another example of liberal insanity like elizabeth smart.  lets invite some homeless person or some horror-core nut job into our home because we can’t be judgmental   if his screen name and the music he wrote wasn’t enough to tell you to stay as far away from this dude as possible i don’t know what would?

Ok, I can see why people feel immediately judged because the police think this guy’s music had something to do with it.  Well…to be honest, it had to.  You guys are saying that you play violent video games & listen to Alyce Cooper…this guy was not doing that..he was creating serial killing-torturing-brutally murdering lyrics…Himself.  There’s really no way that his lifestyle, friends, music, etc. etc. had no influence on him.  I used to be part of the goth-culture before EMO was the thing…What I listened to & did, & who I hung out with..absolutely influenced me.  I didn’t get to the point that Syko Sam did, but my heart was cold, unfeeling, & full of hate & voilence.  So, it’s really not about just playing violent video games or listening to metal.  This dude is obsessed with killing, death, murder in general.  So, what you do, absolutely DOES influence you.  You open yourself up to evil, when you invite it in.  Anyone who has been there before, to whatever extent that may be, knows it’s true.  So, I encourage parents to be the caretakers of your home- protect & guard your kids, they’re precious no matter what age.

Badger

To get a little of the subject since you brought it up I do like playing viloent video games and I listen to hard rock and metal music but I never had any thoughts about harming someone.  The suspect here committed these acts on his own and will be punished for it.

Its wrong & prejudicial, VaResident, to pigeon-hole someone by the looks of their MySpace page and/or what type of music they listen to. Why, why…why I have always adored Alice Cooper, I like violent video games and I enjoying watching videos of animals being tortured. But I am perfectly normal—I mean, what are you trying to say?

Ok, none of that is true. Not even remotely. I just wanted to be the first lying idiot to use that argument here.

Well said, Va Resident. to the killer: welcome to VA, you are going to get yours in the end!  Chilling to think that the young girl met this psycho on a networking site and trusted him enough to invite him to her home. My sympathy goes out to this family, very tragic.
