Lifeboat in piracy drama arrives at Nauticus in Norfolk

NORFOLK — A piece of piracy’s recent history has arrived in Norfolk.

The lifeboat in which commercial sea Capt. Richard Phillips was held captive by Somali pirates in April will be part of a display about piracy at Nauticus, the maritime museum. The orange lifeboat arrived on Wednesday.

Next week, Phillips will be in Norfolk to serve as marshal of the city’s Grand Illumination Parade. During his visit, the New Englander will also meet with crew members of the USS Bainbridge, the Norfolk-based destroyer that served as a base for his rescuers.

Phillips’ ordeal ended when Navy SEALs shot dead three of the pirates and freed the captain unharmed.
